"Actually I only liek the frame because it's based on the 500SL iirc"

Actually, the Crossfire is based on the Mercedes SLK frame.

Pop-up spoiler. Great. So the police officer can tell at a glance that you are over 60mph...

0-60 in 6.5 seconds is on par with the 1.6 Ford Escort I had in the 1980's!!

Hardly a sports 'performance' vehicle.

How does it's price compare to a Nissan Fairlady (350 Z) in the USA?

...and on par or quicker than most 928's ever produced / less than a second slower to 60 than the quickest GTS.

I guess 928's aren't a sports 'performance' vehicle, either.

I ran against a 350Z at a DE event at Pocono. I was able to catch him, but I'm unsure of the driver's experience. The Z sounded/appeared stock

If you get the chance, I think you'll find the new "Z" is quite nice to drive, esp. with a twin turbo kit and some basic suspension tuning.

Personally, I do kinda like the looks of the Crossfire, it just needs an AMG 5.5L V8 engine stuffed under the hood. I might actually be motivated to buy a quasi- American car. Sure the interior sucks, but hey, it is badged as a "domestic" car - and for some reason we can't have a nice factory interior in an American car. Oh well, one of the many reasons the US auto industry is doomed.

I drove an SRT-6 at the Chrysler days at Six Flags. You could hear the superchager which was kinda cool---but you couldn't feel the pull---not cool. I was really surprised, as the SRT-6 boasts what, 330 hp? Pretty flat in the cornering but really unsure in the slalom...It felt kinda like i was slinging a camry with upgraded suspension through the cones because of all the traction control-induced understeer.

The guy that was sitting in the passenger seat asked me if I was interested in cars because of my negative comments about the vehicle. He asked about my cars and I told him what I owned and he went on to say that the 951 is a superior car to the crossfire even to this day if kept up well. He apparently teaches road racing in canada and has owned the likes of 930's and 308's. Even the pros say they suck!

You better have an S/C setup if you go up against the SRT6. I got to drive it at Willow and home and it is one fast car. Basically an AMG 55 engine in a much lighter car. Screaming fast. The standard versions are slow. The SRT6 kicked but on the Nismo Z and the Porsche Boxter S in acceleration.

The car mag reviews of the Crossfire have been anything but kind....evidently the view from behind the wheel is terrible.

IMHO - The Crossfire and new Z's are just shark wannabe's!!!

actually fareastender, the 85 escort gt would scoot to 60 in a blistering 9.7 secs. ask how i know. 6.5 0-60 times are still today very respectable. boxters and the like are in this range. do you have a 4 sec. o-60 ride? if you did i could understand you yawning at 6.5! to all the 78-84 928ers. you are getting these times and better! your cars are FAST. even by 2004 standards. jm$o.2

I like the looks of the Crossfire and suspect the Hemi or another upgrade in the coming years.
The early model year sHARKs -of which there are two residing at my house- are at best a match for the X'fire in straight line acceleration (0 - legal speed limit) . Handling may or may not differ.
If it has legs and can reach the estimated 150/155mph electronically limited top end then its at least two out of three on the road tests. You can argue the about tinsel after the race but no one will be listening. That car will be evolving.
As to the ricers; Evo's, Mitsu's, Subie's, Hondas;
IT"S THE NEW RACING SUB-CULTURE! GET USED TO IT!
They are evolving rapidly and are getting outrageous with bolt on technology, awsome HP out of those I-4 & V-6's. Durability is a factor but if you start getting a slice of your cold *** on a platter on a regular basis... Talking about your 300.000 mile engine, and comfortable seats isn't of much value when oriental, low-buck, steel owners are woofin' on ya'.
If you race them, the win or loss is on you wether they are jerks or not.
Pick your battles!
Keep in mind we are talking different animals and price ranges and younger eyeballs and attitudes. The current technology VVLT, programable shift points. higher efficiency, Some interesting gearing ( if not more of them ).
I love the 928's but I feel I'd be heading down the wrong path if I became snobbish about the car.
On the street the proof is at the end of the race.
FWIW
INFO from MT magazine Nov 2004 issue, Road test result section.
1. 4 of 5 Mitsu's beat my sHARKs(BMS) 0-60 & 1/4 times.
2. 3 of 3 Pontiacs - same-.
3. 3 of 3 Saab's - same -.
4. 7 of 8 Nissans -same-.
5. 2 of 3 Subie's - same -.
6. 2 of 4 Mazda's -same -.
7. 4 of 4 Infiniti's - same -.
8. 4 of 4 Jag's - same -.
9. 6 of 6 Audi's - same -.
10. 5 of 5 Caddy's - same -........... ad nauseam.
I can live with it as I love my sHARKs, for better or worse.
However, after looking into my crystal ball I see a SC for my Weissach and a 86.5 possibly, an S4 in my future.
Jim,
You'd tell your Mom she has a fat as#!
Marlin... Come on, it kinda looked like a 67/68 Charger, right? But the two-tone Red with those awful side scallops in Black. Proportions were way off, too....Hmmm
OK you are right it was an ugly car.
But I still "kinda" like the look of the X'Fire.

I saw a Crossfire parked in the mall [yes- inside] in Anchorage, Alaska last week. I think it was selling for about $38k.

These are indeed the late MB SLK chassis resurrected. Its built in Osnabruck by Karmann- which means that it is built like a brick sh*thouse. Frankly, I loved the SLK. Frankly I think the Crossfire is plasticy and the design looks too "busy". And yes Jim, I'm sure those C-pillars are inspired by the 1960's Marlin....

They are dropping the 5.5 liter V8 in the SLK next year. That means that this engine will fit the Crossfire as well...

N!

Post cross-what?

Yep, I looked at these when they first arrived. The exterior is quite sporty, but the price is beyond acceptance. What's really entertaining is the options in models. Yes, the MSRP starts at $29.9k for the "basic" COUPE model. Note: this ONLY comes in Black. You can get it in any color, as long as you want black. The other (four) models of the Crossfire, come in a few more colors. I found that very interesting...it'll cost you another $5k to get something other than black.
$29.9k - Coupe (Black only)
$34.6k - Coupe Limited
$34.9k - Roadster
$38.9k - Roadster Limited
$45.6k - SRT6 Coupe
