Although awkward to shift, avoiding 2nd gear is a good plan...tough to do additional damage, when not used!

If you can find an 85 up manual trans, latch onto it.
Different style synchros.

The swap is straightforward. Unless it was itself badly abused, it can be night and day difference. Of course clutch actuation and functionality must be correct.

Second is a useful gear and we too had lost use of it on 84 euro until the 86.5 swap. Other early boxes tried first all had issues. Clutch parts were excellent. Later box solved it.

On 84 usa manual Ive tried three different pre 85 boxes, all with some grind. That car has brand new everything, including intermediate plate. Has other issues, so entire clutch assy will be removed and salvaged from that unit.

Have you bought parts for one of those, lately?
Price a synchro....

It's tough to find one of those worth the effort of bolting in.
After all, those transmissions are 36 years old, too.
Generally with a zillion miles on them. (Got to realize that the low mileage cars are not being "parted out"....just high mileage junk.)

I've got a big stack of them...and won't even consider selling one without rebuilding it.
To me, they "cores" only.....and I'm happy when I can get enough "hard" parts to build one transmission out of two cores.

It's like anything else, you try to find a good one.

Mine came from an excellent running shifting 86.5. Unliscensed driver pulled in front of it. Owner did involuntary offloading, scrubbed off speed using trees on right side of car. For $1900 I drove it onto trailer. Sold 3600 worth of parts. Moved suspension and transmission into 84 euro. Shifted like butter. So not a bad situation.
