don't know about the ring compatability, but I belive the custom prices of $200-$275 each was without rings & pins....

rather than speculate, I'd suggest giving Lee a call, he was excited to have the mahle availabilty and his contact info posted on the rennlist, and is very helpful and knowledgable... might be interested in being a sponsor...

maybe a "market correction" will be forthcoming (PURE WISHFUL SPECULATION ON MY PART, I KNOW ABSOLUTLY NOTHING BEYOND THE PHONE #'S, TECH STUFF and PRICES I WAS TOLD & PASSED ON)... but it does seem odd a bigger run would sell for more/unit than a custom run, given tooling & setup costs - but the custom stuff is a direct sale w/the manufacturer as opposed to going through the channel...

IMO, Lee did seem surprised to learn US chrome was doing boring & coating for $1190 on 928 blocks...did the math w/custom JE's and seemed motivated to be competitive...

guess we'll see...

the oem price does include rings & pins, mahle makes the pins and the rings are Gertsi (spelling is off)

Agreed. Let's get some prices to get our blocks done, it's right here in Wisconsin somewhere...

John, you can come and beat us up.

Tim,

You can run stock rings on the Nikasil, no issue. Being up there in Wisconsin you should check out Millennium and US Chrome. Both do great work.

I checked for Mahles for my car, but they were slow to respond and did not have them for 95 mm, but that was a year ago.

It is about time someone comes up with a solution for the Alusil!!!

Well, Tony has a solution for people with 87 pistons - cut them down. If you coat the properly at the crown, then the heat will not get to them past what most want for apower level.

I will be using my stock pistons but coating them with swain on the sides and top. That should keep the host spots from happening at 11-13psi of boost.

BUt yeah - JE all the way with forged 4xxx series aluminum in a sleeved or whatever block. This 325 dollars a piston crap is ludicris.

Heres another idea (ala ATB) - cut your block to 101 or 102 and runs some 500 dollar shevy pistons and change your rods to suite the compression hieght. That would be a nikasiled block, but then your back up because of the needed rods. Well, thats the quandry I guess.

A question for John, how much were your custom JEs? If you don't want to post it here can you please PM me. Thanks.

P.S I think from memory you used the standard Porsche turbo rings and Pins?

john, I found these OEM 928 Mahles for the older cars - pretty reasonable at a little over $1k:

http://www.maximumautoparts.com/PO_P...001_items.html

guess that few extra mm size for later years makes a huge diff in pricing... I've searched high & low myself...been pretty frustrating to see cheby boys get custom stuff for less than we can get a gasket set...but it IS a porsche....

still going to be nikasil/JE for my project... us chrome quotes $1190 to bore an 85 to 104mm & nikasil it... bore & prep on alusil is at least $800, + piston prices (whatever they end up being)... JE's about $1100 w/rings & pins w/a 968 spec....

just thought the mahle info might help anyone going w/mahles...

Call JE, get this job number and double check the specs for the pistons, then call millenium or USChrome and have the block bored and coated accordingly.

Have to find a block with enough cyl wall thickness and not too much core shift first.

I have a UAV Predator orbiting over a location in Anaheim, they left the door
open one day and i got a slant range shot of it on a shelf.

I believe that is what Joe Fan is running in his nikasil block ? Jim? Mark?...Joe?

pictures worth a 1000 words huh! You should show up at the 928s event Brendan!!

there are 2 other folks that i know of doing this also.

One has them coated, the other one doesnt.

cool info guys!! tony, did you notice the compression ht of 1.417 on the box? I think the stock 968 piston has a comp ht of 1.149 and dome of -27cc (not sure how the .175 compares)...think joe's setup is NA, but for a boosted setup, do you think the 1.417 CH would be ok? my understanding is that the "stock" 968 piston will yield about 10.5:1 w/a "stock" S4 head and chamber size... maybe I think too much??

I'll make one eventually. When the car is done and I can drive it there.

Just as an aside,

US Chrome generally does good work - however, take pictures before you send your stuff and package it very well.

We had them f--- up a 951 block pretty badly once. Haven't used them since (~2 years ago), so it may be better now. Their "tech" did a number on it - broke a coupla mounting points, and the job itself was, uhh, not the best work I've seen.

Just my .02...

The Nikasil was $800 and the pistons with Goetze rings and pins were $1250. It cost $100.00 to and from the Cheezeland.
