928 tune up
i want to get my 928 in perfect operating order. i was thinking about getting a "tune up" kit from 928gt.com which contains:
OEM MAHLE Air Filter
PORSCHE Oil Filter
PORSCHE Oil Pan Drain Plug Seal
OEM MAHLE Air Pump Filter
OEM MAHLE - Fuel Filter
OEM BOSCH Platinum Spark Plugs (other Plugs optional)
OEM BOSCH Distributor Cap (2 for 32V engines and 84-86 Euro S)
OEM BOSCH Distributor Rotor (2 for 32V engines and 84-86 Euro S)
for $150
what else should be replaced in a tune up?
what does the "air pump" do? i saw air pump filter and was wondering what the hell that was...
i was also wondering about the bosch platinum plugs, do the quad-electrode make a difference? my friend said he put them on his 8 cylinder mustang and felt a difference... i don't know what to believe.
does anyone know anything about silverstone plugs? are they better/worse than the bosch platinum? sorry if i've been flooding the place with questions, i just have a lot of them!

The "air pump" is also called the "smog pump".
It is a pump that adds air into the car, to help with the reduction of the unburnt hydrocarbons, and CO. If there isn't any extra O2 in the cat, it's not possible to burn the unburnt hydrocarbons is it.
If he felt a diffrence, the plugs he had in before were worn out. I've run two new sets of plugs, Bosch 4+ Platinum, and Bosch Platinum. There was no diffrence in the new plugs proformance. None, nodda, zip, zilch. However, if you replace a set of worn out plugs with a new set, you'd better feel it!
I don't like the 4+ because you can't gap them, and I don't trust the factory to gap them for all applications. The main reason for their existance is to allow for higher millage applications, w/o changeing the plugs. Think about, as far as the engine in concirned, a spark is a spark, and all is well. Even if you've got 4 times the grounds, the spark will only jump from the center to one of the grounds anyway. You may as well make sure that ground is the proper distance!
However, each time the plug fires, it causes some of the metal that makes up the ground to vaporize. If you've got 4 times the grounds, the plug should last 4 times as long! And thats what Bosch did. If your not going to leave your plugs in for 100,000 miles, you may as well go for the cheaper Bosch Platnium plugs.
