Default Dealer Number Mystery

Hi all! We just purchased a 1986.5 928S in December, and are deep in the process of sorting it out! It’s had a few owners, so a lot of the lore on the car is lost, but there’s clues to unravel, and I suspect we’ll have some fun doing that work.

One of my main questions has been on the origin of the car, and on my Warranty Voucher page in the Warranty book, there is the date of first sale, the dealer’s rubber stamp with Porsche script and shield, and the sticker that looks like it was removed from the selling window sticker and placed in the warranty book. Numbers match the Chassis VIN.

When I Google search dealer number #0331, ZERO comes up. I’ve called both my local dealers (Northern CA), Porsche Beverly Hills, Porsche Downtown LA, and made no less than 5 calls to Porsche Customer Service.

Porsche records have the car first sold by Westwood Porsche in Westwood, MA which is flatly incorrect. Not to mention, the people I talked to there were unwilling to help me find this information, AND they were rude about it. Everyone is stumped by this, and I don’t know who to take this question to. Some-body with a Porsche-issued stamp sold a brand new 928 on July 19, 1986.

WHO WAS DEALER #0331 IN WEST LOS ANGELES, CA? I’m dying here! All I wanted was to get a correct dealer plate frame for goodness sakes!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Maybe Merlin Olsen Porsche? It was sold off in the late 80's and bull dozed. That's where mine was sold new.

I'm trying to imagine someone at Porsche caring about this/wanting to spend time on it.
I'm guessing this is not a really huge/important detail, in the history of the car, for them.

Put out a request to the 356 group of the LA area... the older guys will remember the earlier dealerships.

Probably this place. I used to work in that area and it was still a Porsche dealer as of a couple of years ago.

Dude! That’s a strong possibility!

That address from your screenshot shows that location being flanked by Beverly Hills Porsche dealership and their Parts and Service center. The building is being used currently as their Pre-Owned Showroom.

That fits in the West Los Angeles borders, and is the dealership (in name) listed by Porsche. Did Beverly Hills Porsche have a different location at some point? Did it absorb what was once Westwood Porsche?

When I searched Beverly Hills Porsche Westwood, I found this article:
https://patch.com/california/century...twood-f994c0b7
It talks of BH Porsche leaving Beverly Hills proper in 2011, and moving to the Santa Monica Blvd address listed above!

With this info, I called Beverly Hills Porsche today and talked with Maggie, who was actually excited to go on a little bit of a treasure hunt! She connected me with someone named Mike, who had been with BH Porsche since 2001. He remembers that They acquired Westwood sometime in the 90's, and told me that when a dealership is sold, Porsche scraps the dealer number (#0331). He confirmed that number, and solved my mystery! Now I just need a proper plate frame from Westwood!

Thank you everyone for your help!

Looks like you already figured it out...but was gonna say you could pick up one of the dealer directories off eBay from the era. Each car came with a copy and it listed all the dealers in the U.S. and their #'s. It's always fun to try and figure out the history of our cars. I did the same with my 951.

Haha, awesome, good sleuthing. For the sake of completeness, here's a snap I took of the backlot of that place a couple of years ago.

I found that my 86.5 was sold for the first and second times from Jack Daniels Porsche in NJ, the same dealer that originally sold my wifes's 2013 Carrera which we acquired CPO four years ago in GA.

For the license pate frame I would search out one or more of those wreckers who part out bent Porsches exclusively, or mostly. I don't know one specifically, but I recall seeing reference to one or another of them from time to time. You might get lucky.
