I'd say the answer to your question is that at 3000 RPM, it's making enough CFM and boost to be making about 120 rwft/lbs more than you.
(Insert space for John to start whining about how it's not fair comparing his car to a 32v car.)

Speaking of octane:
"Toulene
R+M/2...114
Cost...$2.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.2 Octane
20%...96.4 Octane
30%...98.6 Octane
Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, I.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores."
The cost of Toulene is $9.00/gal from what I have seen. But as low as $7.00 /gal for 5 gal.
Here's the link.

Andy,
True, true. After all, it is just another petroleum distillate. And it works very well to raise octane.
Toluene is one of the 'light aromatics' found already added to gasoline. Depending on country, anywhere from ~10-20% per gallon, IIRC. We've had a thread about Toluene before, somebody had a link to a chart with Tolune content in gas by country - FDR had the most IIRC.
You can run a car on pretty much straight Toluene. It was done in F-1, don't recall if it was early 80's or late 70's. I have run high-comp street cars on up to 30% added Toulene, the real concern is the effect on hoses and other fuel system components. They standard hoses don't always like that much "solvent" sitting in them constantly.
It is a cheap and (semi) available octane booster, with few practical downsides, save for added cost of course. Paint supply houses will have it, though you may have to convince them you're not "huffing" it, or selling it to the losers who do. And with the cost of gas in Cal, it might actually be about the same price.
