Default Gauges, Odometer, and Faces ?

I want to swap out my current 160mph speedo with a 170mph speedo from my '80 euro parts bin. Is this a straight swap?

I was going to swap out the tach too. I want to get rid of the fuel/mpg meter. Is this a straight swap?

Also, I will replacing the odo gear, and I was curious of I can adjust the mileage counter to read the correct/current mileage of my car?

Finally, I will be installing custom gauge faces and would like your opinions.
Should I go with the Euro font (A), or the Swiss font (B)? I'm not a purist, but I do appreciate the retro 80s look of my 928. I know Porsche is now using the Swiss font, which I think is cool too. So I'm undecided at this point. Any comments?

Thanks for all your help!

I like the Euro style...somehow seems less trendy. Where are you getting the new stuff?

I like the Swiss font - more of an updated look.

Jim, just a quick note regarding swapping the tach....you will find that tachs from other earlier cars will read 1/2 the actual RPM when installed with your 84 Euro motor. Tach signal is different from LH unit. That's what happened in my case....84 Euro motor in 1980 US car with original 80 tach. I sent the tach to a VDO shop, they were able to recalibrate to read correct RPM. I wish I had taken the 84 Euro tach with the motor....even though it has the fuel meter. BTW, will you keep the 84 tach or get rid of it? I might be interested. Let me now if you have any questions.

I prefer font A....all business.

Rich,
Thanks for the info. May I ask how much it cost to recalibrate it?
I'm also going to look into deleting the mpg meter from the tach.

If I end up with an extra 84 tach, I will contact you.

Jim, I think it was around $75. Tachs from other early cars will not have the MPG meter. I have only seen it on the 84-85 Euro cars. I know the later S4's had digital MPG meters, but I'm not sure about early S4's.

BTW, speedo shops can set the odometer to the correct mileage for you. You might be able to do this yourself, but be careful and don't break anything. Replacing gears etc is easy....everything comes apart and is straighforward, but the pieces are tiny.

I have a complete zero mileage odometer with gears if you are interested, it has never been installed. But it may be just as easy for you to replace your broken odo gear.

Rich.

Rich,
Right. My 80 Euro tach doesn't have the mpg meter, and would need to be recalibrated.
Maybe at the same time, I could get the odometer done. There gears are not broken on either of my speedos, but I figure it will be a good thing to do to the 80 speedo as it is the original.
My 84 has an essentially new speedo as it was swapped out by the PO because he got sick of reading KPH. He did that in 2000. I wish it still had the original KPH gauge.
I'm looking into custom gage faces, and inquired if they have a screen for KPH. That would be ideal along with a new odo gear, and correct/current mileage (which I had do some research to figure out).

Rich, I appreciate the offer...

Thanks.

heinrich,
Can't live with 170? Do you have the 160 or 180?

I have no problem with the 160, but since I have a 170, I figure I could use it.

I don't want to steal my own thread (can that happen?) but..
Does anyone know if an S4 tach would work on my Euro? They are both LH brains (different version), different EZK ...different flex circuit board (tach interface)?
Hmmm...
