Default Tensioner replacement or rebuild?

Just bought a 1986.5S 5sp, 82k. Unsure of last TB service so getting it done. Mechanic is saying I need to replace the tensioner, it’s $1300, which is fine, I got a steal on this car but wondering if rebuild is better way to go. I zero experience with this and just want to be sure it’s done right. Appreciate any advice. Thx!!

You would really pay $1300 for a tensioner and feel good about it?? There are many other things that are better use of your $$.

Look into the Porken tensioner.

I always rebuild the factory tensioner unless the bore is damaged.
That wont be evident till the old part is taken apart.
That said its about 90.00 for the parts to rebuild a tensioner.
new boot, new clamp, new white isolator, new gasket and O ring and STP
and a new spacer washer if necessary then a new pivot bolt and new bushings.
I reuse the tensioning bolt but apply PTFE sealant to the threads so it wont leak

There's a red flag here. If I were you I would get the rest of this mechanic's estimate and post here for evaluation before spending another penny. Replacing a tensioner is rarely necessary as Stan pointed out, but it could be a legit recommendation. Or you might be looking at a humongous total bill if he wants to replace everything in the TB system. You've come to the right place for advice.

^^This. Is car already disassembled? Or are we in quote mode? I see you are flying what appears to be a VA plate, where are you located?

I just see foreign cars in that pic, you need a current 928 mechanic, current in parts sourcing and experienced, to do that job. Seriously.

Yes, in Northern VA. And yes, in quote stage but I don’t have a ton of options at this point. Don’t want to drive it as belt light came on during test drive. If you know someone in DC/MD/NoVa area I’m all in. This guy was recommended by Porsche and is working on a 928 GTS right now (friend of mine) but I am worried about his 928 experience. Had a long talk today about rebuild and/or PKT. He had never heard of the PKT. Roger at 928sRus was amazing. I am having my mechanic call him to discuss. Right now I am leaning PKT, would be ok with rebuild but not buying a new detensioner at $1300. Below is initial quote, I don’t mind it but I do want someone who is going to do it right. Thanks so much for all the advice!
928 work estimate:
Timing belt drive belts and water pump $2500
Brake flush. $175
Front and rear lid struts $150
Power steering reservoir and fluid flush $400
PS hoses leak?
Left tie rod and 2rack boots $700
Valve cover gaskets leak $850
Clean engine bottom $175
Oil service $200
Possible parts issue with TB tensioner etc

put it on a truck and ship it to me,
you can drive it home when Im done 19038 Glenside PA

NOTE based on that estimate I would suggest that you might need a new master cylinder and possibly a booster, plus add in new SS flex hoses
Cam covers might need to be powder coated before installing them.

AND if you do some research you should be able to remove the right side belt cover to inspect the belt , post some pictures
and then retension the belt yourself, and put it back together and drive it

You are located some 250 miles from one of the best 928 resources on the planet- suggest you send Stan [Mr Merlin] a PM and arrange a telephone call given the numbers you are floating to assess whether you have a common interest.
