If all goes well with my PPI this week, I will either be driving or trucking a 928 home to Boston from New Orleans. I have to admit I am a bit torn between the two.
One one hand, I would love to drive the car home it is only 1400 miles and the trip would be a lot of fun, but on the other I like the convenience of having someone pick it up and drop it off for me.
I am doing some homework now and I have checked into several trucking companies so far, and they are all about the same price give or take a few bucks. Does anyone here have any experience trucking their 928 or would like to recommend a good trucking company?

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

I JUST finished a 1400 mile drive today. I would have loved to have made it in the 928, I am looking forward to it a little later this spring.
I rented a car with a buddy, drove from MN to KY, dropped the rental at the airport and DROVE my new 928 home 800 miles.
DRIVE
I personally wouldn't trust anything but the best transporter ie; enclosed truck, only once on and once off, no switching spots or trucks. Those guys cost more for a reason. Besides, have you ever tried to tie down a 928? There are very few good ways to do it, chances are the transpo guy doesn't much care.
Not to get too philosophical or anything, but life should be about adventures, take this opportunity, enjoy it, definately bring the V1.

I drove the '89 GT from Long Island to Houston (is there a physical law governing geographic distribution of '89 GTs?), taking more than 14 hours. I drove Skyline Drive in the dark. I would have detoured to Deal's Gap, but when I got to that neighborhood I was 80% wrung out. Next time!
I got a ticket in Virginia (85 in a 65, which they call "reckless driving" in that godforsaken state), but drove the rest of the way with my V1 on and didn't have any other problems with revenooers.

Drive, drive, drive. You don't get that many opportunities in this life to really do the things you like. Take a couple days off, and drive it home.
I went from Portland, OR to Pacific Palisades in So. Cal to pick up my wife's driver a few years ago and I drove it back.... about 900 miles up the super slab of I-5. What a great experience. The big rigs keeping right and that Black bullet boring a hole in the night in the left lane. Nothing like it. Daylight brought The climb over the pass into Oregon, with snow right down to the edges of the roadway, but the pavement was dry! Big long sweeping corners that are made for 928's at waaay above the legal limit.
Slightly over 900 miles door to door in thirteen hours, including time to get it washed before delivering it to its new owner. Average speed about 70, including all stops for gas and nature. I still remember it like it was last month. Why would you deprive yourself of a memory like that?
V 1, Credit card, Cell phone and AAA card. You are golden.
Go for it!

I left my V1 on in Virginia, but had it sitting low on the dash. It was after dark, so if needed, I would have grabbed the suction mount and tossed it into the passenger footwell. We seem to have travelled in opposite directions in our shark quests..

If I had it to do over, I'd've made sure I had radar coverage across Virginia. I'd've risked losing the V1 if I got stopped, and bet that I wouldn't have been stopped.

Get yourself an E-Ticket, it should be cheap as
New Orleans and Beantown are both Hub city's.
Fly up there, check the basics, electrics/mechanicals, HEATER.
Fill er' up, add munchies/drinks and drive!
I flew out around noon on Wednesday, 17 March,
kibbutzed and went over the sHARk from around 10:30pm till 1 am-ish.
Went on a short sight seeing picture taking cruise in the 10:00/11:00am
time frame sort of closed the deal around noon 18 MARCH.
Stopped for gas/munchies/quick review of the map...adios.
Roughly, 1200 miles later I arrived home at a little before
9:00am on Friday the 19th of March.
Had a serious caffene buzz so I washed the sHARk , unloaded it, did a load of clothes and took a shower. Then drove to work and showed it off for awhile -work stoppage!
Seriously, it's a great time to aquaint yourself with your sHARk, and things should be blooming as you head south.
You might want to dig up the road help list just in case.
HAVE FAITH IN YOUR 928!!!
ENJOY

The car has a fairly new tb and waterpump. The PPI will probably tell more.
The owner states there is a shake above 70mph and one tire is out of round, which is a recipe for disaster on a long trip. That is why I am thining of trucking it. If I get that straighted out I am good to go.
Where can I find the best deal on a V1. Should I check the archives for the 928 road help list?

V1 = $400 Still, I wouldn't speed with any less. I have an almost new Passport 8500 for sale. I couldn't trust it. I now have a V1 for me, and one for my wife.
Sounds like you have a good excuse to buy some decent new tires.
