drive it but before the trip take it to a shop and have the wheels balanced, but the PPI should tell you if it is the tire or say a loose wheel bearing

I would be checking for a bent wheel ; "out of round " tires are often just out of round due to being mounted on a bent wheel . It is also not uncommon for wheel weights to fall off causing a vibration at speed . Those front tires have a lot of tread , several thousand miles worth . A good tire balance could be all it needs . Speed related vibrations are almost always wheel or tire issues not suspension or wheel bearings .

Looks like some high performance tires with plenty of tread. A Hunter machine can detect rim problems as well as tire problems. A good Hunter tech should be able compensate with a good balance job. I have seen out of round tires shaved too.
There are numerous possibilities in high speed vibrations. Could just need to tighten the front wheel bearings properly. Front wheel bearings are also cheap and easy to replace. You could need tie rod replacements. Could be shocks, springs, motor mounts, cv joints, alignment, a-frame bushings,… maybe the steering rack could cause vibration too.
I would certainly have the balance job done with a good analysis of the out of round condition. The front tires look so new that they may not have to be replaced. What kind are they?

We found Rosy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, flew down to pick her up, had one of the best drives ever! About 85MPH all the way home, and Rosy just glided! ( On the wif's first dance behind the wheel, she accidentally got up to 95 MPH, after she'd brought it back down, told me she didn't think she was doing 70! Ya shoulda heard the squawk she made, when she looked down at the speedo!!!! )
Last September, I had to go to Idaho, fast! 3900 miles, there and back, in less than 4 driving days. And much less cost than airfare! I had a CB as well as the V1, both saved my bacon several times. And the comments from various truckers, et al, were hilarious as well.
If the PPI and other inspections work out, absolutely, drive 'er home!!!! You won't regret the time!

Thom1 the tires are Michelin Pilots. They look better than I thought.
I am driving her home! I told my wife what type of response I got and she couldnt believe it. She also thinks I am nuts.
The PPI is tomorrow. Abby, a fellow rennlister, is going over to stand in for me as he knows the owner of the shop very well. The current owner will also be there to answer any questions. So far so good. I have got a lot of help from the board and I appreciate it.
I am pretty confident that things will go well.
The trip back should be a blast. I hope I see at least one other 928 on the road on my way back.

Outside of Flagstaff once, truckers alerted me to a twister which I finally spotted and waited for it to subside. I had wondered why they were all parked along the road. Nice guys really, and when they see the CB antenna they get talkative. One even described his 928 at home in his garage. Ha! Ha! Ha!. Sometimes though certain members of your entourage might take offense at some of the candid conversation.
What I want from Santa now though is a Bear Tracker. Those pesky bears seem to be lurking everywhere sometimes, and they are often hungry. Not good to feed the bears, 'cause they just keep wanting more and more.

There was a road I know of, takes off about Little America, in Wyoming, route 30 I think, and shortens the milage considerably from going all the way to SLC, then up I-15 to Pocatello, and while I was traveling along, passed a coupla trucks, and all of a sudden, one of 'em hollers up "Whuts a Buckeye Porsh doin' on th' backroads of Wyoming???"
We chatted for a bit......Entertaining!

I'll be the first to tell you all, Moon is getting a BEAUTIFUL S4!!! I went to the shop this morning, met the owner, and looked at the car. I checked the documentation, which was very thorough and talked with Randy from Greff Motors who did the ppi. Car is VERY clean all the way around and has been well taken care of it's entire life. No leaks or paint work. Interior panels and dash in A+ conditon and the interior is very good overall, sweet RMB, nology wires and all is well documented. During the ppi they rebalanced the wheels. The ppi wrench said he sees few 928s in this condition, and he said I quote " I usually write a $2500 to$5000 service bill for needed work when I inspect these." "I would have a tough time finding anything the car needs" So the car is right!

Another thought...the local 928 Owners Club gang are getting together for a dyno day (3 pulls for $75), social gathering, tech session, show 'n tell, food, and BS at Musante Motorsports (www.musantemotorsports.com) just north of Hartford, CT on Sat. April 24 starting at 9AM. Bring your car, meet some great folks, check out your true rear-wheel horsepower/torque (optional; spectators are welcome), and meet David Lloyd, one of Southern New England's premier 928 gurus, an excellent source of 928 information and wrenching talent. I caught the 928 dyno day the morning after I arrived home from picking up my car in Texas 2 years ago (still filthy from its 3 day journey), and met a great bunch of folks, learned a lot about these cars, and was pleased by my stock S4's numbers on the dyno.

Thank you Abby! You certainly made the process easier for me. I appreciate all the advice I have received on the list. I am glad I joined and I am glad I waited for the right car!
