New Aluminum Undertray - Cooling Ducts??
I just purchased one of the new black aluminum engine undertrays for the 87 S4. Not too sure, but it appears the original design has two of the air inlets on it attached to air ducts, to route cooling air to certain areas up inside the engine compartment.
Is this the case? Did the original design have cooling ducts attached to the tray? If so, any hints on where they may be available to buy?

You are correct. The original pan has two 'verticle' ducts, you are supposed to take them off your old pan and install them on the new one. They are riveted on.

Have someone fab a pair for you...

Yup - I would transfer them if I had them...
So they are made of metal, not plastic like the rest of the original tray?
Also, any adverse effects if they are left off the new tray?

The wife wanted to buy a bunch of furniture, and the KLR was collecting dust during the time, so I said "what the heck" and sold a great bike for some frickin furniture. Temporarily lost my senses I guess...
Oh well, a new FJR 1300 is starting to look good (2 wheeled 928 equivalent).
So what's the story on your KLR?

Since it's your thread, I guess this doesn't count as a hijack...
87 with 14K mainly road miles. Got it in '95 IIRC, as a salvage title bike. It had been stolen and the plastic got trashed. Spent 3+ years getting all new plastic (it was the one year of mainly white plastic with blue and green decals) stuff was always on backorder, NLA etc. Just kept ordering it till it all came in. Replaced the panel melting SuperTrapp with a Cobra exhaust - nice sound, good power, no melty panel. New Michelin Siracs, chain, sprockets, etc. Few spots here and there, but no rust and everything cleaned up ok for an old bike that got ridden.
The guys I rode with on the street were RC51, Gixxer, Aprilia, 991, 999 folks. They were always amazed how close it could stay in the tight and twisties. (One of the other guys rode a KLR too.) Then the straight comes and at 40 MPH they leave me like I was driving a Yugo.
It could cruise at 110, which frankly, is as fast as I want to go on that particular bike, tucked in or not. Since it was redlined, I imagine there was another ~10 MPH in it with a new sprocket, but just sitting a little too tall for that.
That's one thing I always liked about the bike was the height - pretty visible to the meat-puppet brigade, and if they still don't see you, you have decent ability to ride into the median...
Anyway, hadn't ridden it for almost a year, and was involved in a business that was running WAY behind schedule (ugly story for a different day) and it was necessary to free up a little cash. God, I hate myself.
This is the first time since I was 12 that I haven't had a bike stashed somewhere, and I'm gettin' the itch. But too much car stuff going on right now, maybe next year.

what about the air intakes, are these the naca style ducts? any issues if left off? i have an undertray now for my 86 and it has come without any ducting or cut-outs for ducts.

Greg - I feel your pain. I've been riding bikes for 27 years, and no bike in the stable right now. The 928 more than makes up for it in fun though.
Nick - I called one of the Big 3 this AM, and the tray I bought from them has the Naca intakes, just no ducts attached where the ducts should be. They said the Naca intakes alone were sufficient, without the ducts. I want to agree, but am still a little concerned given that Texas Summers can get pretty dang hot around here. It would be nice to know where these ducts could be bought from.
Any experts care to chime in? Can the car get by without the ducts? Where did the ducts point to? Are they available anywhere. Any homemade duct stories out there?
Just trying to get all the ducts in a row (ohhh, that was baad).

I had the same questions when I purchased the tray from 928 International late last year. I was told that they (the ducting) wasn't needed. It gets pretty hot here also in California, so if anything will help in the cooling it can't be bad. I don't have the tray that goes behind that one and was wondering if that one is needed?

Guess I'll look around on the Internet for ducts. This should be like finding a needle in a haystack.
