Needless to say, i got worked because it was my first time. I recieved no instruction, so on my first race against a WRX i started on the green light instead of the third yellow, like i later found out from the guy driving the WRX (who turned out to be a pretty cool guy). Then for some unknown reasons in my next two races i got put up against two other 12 second cars instaed of 14's like me. the first one was an extremely loud 60's camaro, which did 13.5 @ 104 versus my 14.7 @ 95, but then my next race i got put up against a brand new mustang cobra that obviously had a lot of work done to it, because it ran 12.6@112 versus my (i messed this race up, my car was in neutral, not drive) 14.6@94... well i guess thats what i get for being inexperienced. I gave up at that point and went home, i didnt feel like catching my car on fire trying to prove myself against 12 second cars that i had no chance against with even with good starts. if means anything there was barely anyone in the crowd, so i hope i did not ruin the 928 name.

Chris,
You actually didn't do bad. 14.6 is pretty quick for a stock S4 automatic. I went to the track before I supercharged my car and my best time was 14.7 after altitude adjustment (around 15.3 before atl adjust). It was kind of embarrassing to have a Porsche this slow at the track. The 928 deserves better than that.
After I supercharged the car it was a different story all together. I went back with the Whipple 2300AX pumping 8.8 psi and beat all of the 100+ street cars there except 1 and even held my own with some dedicated drag race cars. I was running street tires at normal inflation. My best time was 12.4 w/ atl adjust 12.7 w/o. I made 8 runs close to that time that night. I made several runs that were much slower because if I come off too hard my car will spin through 1st and 2nd and hit the rev limiter within a few seconds. Needless to say I got a ton of attention in the lineup. I had at least 25 people inquiring about the car as opposed to.....none when I was running around 15 sec.
The night before I went to the 1/4 mi track, LACR at Palmdale, I went to a 1/8 mi track, Irwindale. I ran .3 sec faster at in the 1/8th at Irwindale than I did at Palmdale. If I had turned that time in the 1/8th at the 1/4th mi track at Palmdale I would have easily run high 11s. I may have even run mid to low 11s because the 2nd to 3rd shift was so very slow. Steve Catteano is working on a mod for this slow shift due to timing retard during some shifts. If I get this straightened out and get some some BF Goodrich drag radials (thanks Jim Bailey) then consistent times in the 11s should be no problem. Give me a 2.54 final drive w/ LSD or just a 5 speed and low 11s maybe high 10s would be a regular occurence.
I would like to see more 928s report their 1/4 mi times, mainly the modified ones. I am not a drag racer but 1/4th mi times are a good measure of performance for the way we drive in the US. You can claim xxxx peak HP but until you put you put it to the ground consistently it dosen't matter.

FYI...Fast, yes, but 12.6@112 isnt a lot of work for the Cobras
With a few easy mods they are well capable of 450-500+ HP
Time for a blower Sax!

why is it that all mustangs, even the most expensive, like a saleen, all look exactly the same?! i mean the saleen has a body kit, but unless you are into cars enough to notice something as subtle as that you would think that the guy who owns like a cobra or a saleen has the same car as just about everyone else on the street. I dont care if i win or lose, I am happy to know that my car is more unique and rare than those stupid mustangs.

well, all cobras and saleens ARE technically mustangs, just beefed up a little. Yeah, they only have subtle differences, but theres also camaros and vettes and other cars in that "muscle" category.
sounds like your car needs boost. YOU TOO can be unique AND fast as hell.

Yup, i couldn't agree more, the 928 is timeless in style and was way ahead of its time. However, neither one, or the name PORSCHE, will get you close to top dog in the quarter mile at a local track night.
IMHO, Andy is getting it dialed in and has carried the drag racing torch for the us in 928!! Show up in your 17yr old car with some modern stuff bolted on with some good 'ole imagination and trial-error tuning and "blow" them all away. Well, nearly all of them.![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Smaller pulley and Drag radials...Go for it Andy.

VU,
I think more boost would make me a little quicker. I think drag radials/and or an A28 16 trans w/ LSD would make me a lot faster w/o adding boost or octane.

I have been a passenger in a Cobra (late model) up to 100mph and maybe it's just me (this thing had a custom Saleen Suspension) .... but I was scared stiff. That thing is a monster, but at 90mph it feels as if it's going to bounce off the road .... again, not to p. anyone off, no offense, just my personal experience.

The Cobra's and Saleen's are very fast in a straight line. I have been in a GT at around 140, I have had 2 and all I can say is they are scarey when you have to turn em. At the PIR drag night during the summer they pretty much rule the 1/4.
Coming back from Seattle once in my S4 I had a GT that I was playing with, we were in the 120 range when we approached a soft right turn that opened up to 3 lanes so I gassed it a bit while at the same time I think the GT lifted. Me thinks he had no faith when it came to corners.

FWIW there was a 04 Cobra at the track the night I went. It was a dedicated drag car. It was lightened, and had drag slicks. he seemed to be running around 12.0 adjusted or 12.4 un adjusted. This was only.4 sec faster than my best time.

Regarding Mustangs - Before I bought my Porsches - I owned three mustangs 5.0L - 2 were GT's and one was a LX - 2 Convertibles. It doesnt take much to make a mustang scream.
On my 92 GT convertible - I installed ASP underdrive pulleys - Ford Motorsports 4 core Aluminum racing radiaitor - A K&N filter Cone - and the tranny had a B&M transpack shift kit installed (Auto) - which shifted a 220psi through all four gears - Yes it was a head snapper.
One night I raced a pre C5 corvette on the freeway (not proud) - lets just say, we were side by side , literally up to 130 mph before we had to back down because of traffic. Afterwards, when I exited the freeway, the corvette followed and at the light commented how he was surprised at my stang. His car was all stock minus exhaust - I remember him saying - Dude, I was standing on it and I couldnt pull. That was pretty cool -
Lesson Learned - Mustangs are wicked machines when built properly. If I didnt have my sharks - Id be running blown mustangs. More bang for the buck than any vette in my book.
On the other hand - just because someone owns a sweet stang doesnt mean they knoiw how to drive it. (with any car for that matter)
At my last track event with Pro Auto Sports - A new blown Cobra over accelerated in a straight, went off the track - hit the tire barrier and did 13k dollars worth of damage to his new toy.
OUCH - thats gotta hurt!
