Cool tool bag ideas

I carry more tools than those in the rear tool holder that came with the car.
I stash most of them in the spare tire/wheel space, including sockets, wrenches, pliers, rubber gloves, hand cleaner, shop towels, flares, heavy cord, tie wraps, tape, and of course, duct tape. I also need to remove the spare tire to access the battery from time to time, and hate needing to unload the stuff in it first, including the compressor. Then it gets scattered on the pavement and I must retrieve it all and re-pack it so the tire cover will fit just right. PITA for sure.

I have a better idea, and probably it is not unique. Why not a heavy canvas tool bag that is round and fits into the wheel space inside the spare wheel? So I researched the availability of such an item. Griot's has a "car care kit" that comes in a fabric bag with zipper closure that they will sell, minus the car care products, for $60. Probably flimsy fabric. JC Whitney has nothing. Performance Products has nothing, or hasn't answered my email inquiry. Sears has nothing.

I know a handy upholsterer across the street from my office who could sew such a bag and put a handle on top of it with a heavy duty zipper. I haven't asked the cost of one bag, but he charged me $45 to make a "glove" for my driver's seat bolster out of vinyl to protect the bolster from wear as I get in and out. It has lasted for 1 1/2 years with no visible signs of wear. But if enough people were interested, perhaps he would do the tool bag for much less than a single order. (?) Is anyone else interested in designing/making such a bag?

Harbor Freight Tools has a 11" black canvas tool bag for $7.99. I just bought one on sale for $3.75.

Thanks Steve. I am really seeking a round bag to fit in the spare tire. I called Harbor Freight but they don't offer one. I could use their bag but it still doesn't fit in the wheel. I may get it if nothing else turns up, but really want to make a round one.

I'm interested. Would like to see picture of mock-up first.

Related topic: my sun roof crank is missing. I don't have any hope of finding OE, there is a 911 kit complete on ebay now for $68, but hey . . . then I have to try and sell my old kit minus you know what. Anybody have a picture especially of the head that engages the gear so I would know what I might replace it with? I know this is a special request, but would be grateful.

I will look in my tools for the crank. Is it the same as the crank that is used for the seats? I know I have that.

Heinrich:

I am a vegan. No leather for me. I know, I know, the seats are leather. I am looking for a way to recover them in fabric like my Koenig seats in my 914/6. Then I can be "correct".

When mine gets back from the paint shop (2 weeks, she'll be red, very red), I'll do some measuring and see what we can come up with. I would think some kind of domestic leather or maybe nylon would be good.

My wife uses round bags to store the fine china dinner plates. Those bags might work for you....get them at Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy's, Linen-n-Things, etc.

Two of those H-F canvas bags will fit nicely back-to back inside the spare. Unless there's something big that requires the flat space of a bigger round bag, I'd use the two smaller ones. They are cheap at less than $5 on sale, plus small tools inside won't be able to roll around as much in the smaller bags.

I have a small purse-size Husky tool kit that rides along, in addition to the tool-tray tools. So far that's been more than I've never needed for keeping the car rolling. It has come out a couple times to help with other cars having problems, though. I guess that's the way it should be. I try to do my serious wrenching while safely at home.

Cheers!

Dr Bob , but of course . You do your wrenching at home ......you try to fix things BEFORE they fail !!! preventive maintenance is ...... preventative ?

Jim, no matter how much preventative maintance you do, there always in that odd thermostate that decides to freeze up, or the NEW radator hose that desiges it shouldn't be new, or the water pump that dicides time time for a t-belt job, 55,000 miles and 4 years early.

Then it pays to have some stuff to fix that car, expecaly when your in the middle of no where, and Billy Bob the Mechenic keeps telling you how great that flat 6 is.

Thanks to Steve J, I am now surfing Harbor Freight.

What is the deal with this? $1.99 for a socet set? I know they must be crap, but $1.99? Would be a nice set to keep in the car for emergencies when the good set is at home:

I would suggest aginst it.

The sockets are all right. The socket wrench will last you 3 maybe 4 spins of a bolt. It would really suck to be in the middle of no where and have your socket wrench come apart in your hands.

The wrench if a mixture of plastic, and extreamly cheap metal parts. They just self destruct.
