Here in the US, radiator shops are able to clean gas tanks.

My neighbour’s uncle works for Porsche so I’ll see if I can squeeze him for a Certificate of authenticity.

On another note. My partner surprised me with these this morning... lucky boy!

Australian delivered cars will have a compliance plate pop riveted in the engine bay, The distributor is different too you can compare the numbers but probably easier just to see what timing is on the harmonic balancer. Euro is 28, Australian 23. Looking at the photo of the rear there are no fog lights so I'm guessing Australian delivered.

That would be luxurious, although we are restricted from travel within 5km of our residences at the moment due to COVID. Doesn't look too bad in there though. Tank was empty.

Inside tank wasn’t as bag as I thought it would be

This in the outlet/in tank pump union. Is this game over for the tank or is there a fix for this spot? Not sure how I’ll go finding one of these in Aus.

Jon,
Also in Melbourne with an 83 Euro 3 speed AT - originally UK delivered so its a full Euro. PM me for location if you want to look at it, or ask about how things go together. A company named Petroject used to do injector etc cleaning, but they seem to have disappeared. There is a workshop near me (Auto Coupe) that could test injectorsm but you might do as well buying the short brass MB injectors - available and cheap. Re the tank - gently see if you can unscrew the outlet fitting, but if its stuck the tank may be history. Somebody in USA does a fix for it - try Roger at 928srus.com for pretty much everything you need. I suggest you grab the CIS kit from Graham, as it will have been in use until relatively recently, and less likely to have sediment and fuel crud hiding inside - CIS systems do NOT like sitting idle for long periods!
Also get a set of manuals on CD through Roger - you are seriously going to need them. I have a couple of specific tools here.
good luck.

Default Positive Battery cable

About now I’m really regretting not pressure washing the undercarriage before moving it into the shed. So much desert.

Didnt break any clips thankfully, rear crossmember was a bunch of fun.

I can get a good measurement to order the new one to be made now. Will go the marine grade tinned copper route and get the insulation and lugs crimped on by the supplier. Rapid cable in Qld.

Length lug to loop: 3490mm
Diameter: 13mm

Looks like your tank has a pump inside it - these are very problematic, breaking the short hose joining it to the outlet, and the debris jams the external pump. My car did many years in Saudi at temps to 45C (with CIS) and had no issues, so I recommend deleting the in tank pump - its replaced by a screw in filter, so nothing changes outside.

I was wondering if a delete was possibly....especially after i saw the price of a replacement. Is any other mod required for the delete or just the filter?

This one:-
https://928srus.com/products/928-201-081-04-in-tank-fuel-strainer-filter-78-to-88,
screws in. Use some antiseize on the threads. Start off very lightly tightened , then only tighten enough to stop it leaking. Read this thread, and many others on this topic.

With the tank out you could test for leaks - fit a hose on the outlet and run it up inside the tank top hole (or the filler neck), put some kero inside - less flammable. Some say they have sealed leaks from cracks at the outlet with epoxy (I used PC11, still have some) and a hose clamp.

Jon,

What a great thread! You are one of the bravest souls mate - - - diving into the deep end of 928 rehabilitation on your first go!

I lived in Melbourne and have a bunch of friends there and they are all going nuts with the Covid lockdown. How you are getting things sourced and done is beyond me with the 5km restriction. Hopefully it will be lifted soon.

The Zinnmetallic is a super color and the desert patina is awesome! Where did you find it and what suburb of Melbourne do you live in? I have been a part owner in a number of ski shops (all closed now) with locations in Downtown Melbourne, Collingswood, Fern Tree Gully, Moorabbin, & Gelong. You live in a fun part of the world!!!

Post lot's of photos of your progress and the best of luck bringing this shark back to life!

Subscribed!

Dave

Here's something to print for your garage wall... More aptly titled "Sand Shark" just to go along with your thread...

Enjoy!

You will also need a different hose pipe from the strainer to the pump. The original in pump outlet size is different on the strainer.
