Question What to park next to the 928?

Hello all,

My S4 restoration is just about complete. In what little free time I have found over the past few months I have only been working on my 928. I have not even washed my wife's car (something I usually did after bathing the Porsche).

My bride has been very patient with my shark addiction over the years. However recently when looking at my pampered S4 (occupying both spaces in the garage), she remarked with a slight hint of distain that her car was "The bloody family wagon". It's a great condition Audi 200 turbo, and what it is, is "a bloody tank"! Very good car, very reliable, but next to the 928....it has apparently become, very boring.

What to do???

Yea..... buy a new set of 18' RH 3.6 turbo wheels for the S4, and maybe a set of MB Quart component 316's for the rear, and a new alpine MP3 deck, and...

...No wait, that won’t help.

...or will it????

No, defiantly not.

Oh ya, the wife.....ya....her car, right.

OK, I figured I would surprise her with a nice car. It needed to be a nice ride, 4 door, German, not a wimp, be affordable/accessible to me without the use of a gun, and most importantly look good next to the 928.

Well today I got her a lovely Audi A8 Quattro with tiptronic. I think it has a little over 300hp (not sure). It's in great shape, however it has a damaged passenger side fender (I would rather replace this fender then repair it). The car will be a surprise, so I have not told her yet, and need to get the fender addressed before I can slap a ribbon on it.

I have 3 questions that I was wondering if some could help me out:

1) Is this Tiptronic gearbox the same Porsche tech as found in the 996?

2) Does anyone have a link to an Audi Message board like the rennlist?

3) Does anyone know of a good Audi dismantler where I can find an A8 right fender?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

WOW - now you have quite a "stable"... I always loved the Audi A8 when I got to drive one of them. When they first came out I was working part time for a company that cleaned rental cars, and I was one of the people transferring them from and to the airport.

In case you don't know: Paul Jager has an A8 as well!

Best or luck with both cars

What MY A8?

The A8 is a nice car - I continue to be tempted by them myself. But I'd rather have a manual transmission, so I went with the S4 instead.

The new A8 is getting rave reviews, except for the MMI which is Audi's version of the hated BMW iDrive touchscreen control system. Then there's the new A8 6.0L with the W12 engine...

I bought my wife a C-4, she loves it and gripes when she has to drive the 928....which is just fine with me.

Regards,

Ken

I complemented the 928 with a 2000 Audi S-4. It looks good and can outrun the 928 from 0-137.

This is my exact quest right now, other then returning my S4 to the road in perfect order.

SOme choices:
96-98 Lexus LS 400
95-99 BMW 740iL
Audi A8L (big back seat is the theme here)
99-2004 Toyota Avalon

Request by wife? Turn key, drive.

MY request? Have enough left over to get a nice auto 928 for her.

Had an 2003 Audi S8 and a 2001 Audi S4 Avant and they were both AWESOME cars. Audi's fit and finish is first rate, you will love the A8!

Got rid of the S8 for the S4 Avant and a 996 cab that lasted 2 months (I'm was to tall for it). Sold the 996 and S4 and bought the 93 GTS and a Cayenne S. The Cayenne is a beast of a truck and ALL Porsche! SO says she is going to keep the Cayenne for a while...... We'll see.

Scott the 2000 Audi can outrun the '81 Porsche ... not bad huh ;-) On-track at SRP there has been an Audi S4 ... not one of the S4-and-later cars had a problem with it Neither with a couple of Subaru WRX's.

Hello guys, you to Nicole

Thanks for the encouraging words Re the A8. I can't wait to get it shiny new, and a big bow.

It was a toss-up between the A4, A6, and MB C-280. I've had an Audi in the stable (as Nicole eloquently put it) for 12 years, and have enjoyed every one. It was looking like the A4, as I was unable to find the right A6 or C-280 (fabulous car though the A4). When I came across the A8 it was a done deal.

Bill, thanks for the link. It is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have already used it to find a fender.

Brendan, all nice cars. I really like the big German "sleds". My wife however parks in a parking garage at work so I was concerned about the extended wheelbase. The big back doors are great for kids though. Re the Lexus LS 400, I've never spent time in a new higher end Asian car, but I never liked the interior of any of the ones I have been in the past.

Chuck, I am envious of all your cars, past and present. I hate you!

Randy.....come on now. How much time does you wife spend in the left seat of your sweet 750il?

Jerry, nice pic of your A4. Is that the valet driver from the club?

I hope my wife does not look in on this forum

For years I had a '66 Ford F100 pickup truck. Done up in Rustoleum...every panel was a different color, courtesy of a case of beer and a bunch of cargo pilots sitting around bored...

I can't remember when the issue came out...probably around 1996 or so, but that truck won a contest in Flying magazine for most outrageous "airport car", though I didn't own it at the time. But the all- time classic for that thing was the night that I jumpseated to Europe on Delta Airlines. The plane was full, and I wound up sitting on the cramped seat in the cockpit. As we crossed the Atlantic, the Deltoids flying the MD-11 started talking cars. The Captain lived in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and started describing this truck he sees at the employee parking lot in Orlando... I'm like "Oh, you mean that old Ford with all the colors?" and he's said "Yeah...its great! He's got this big **** on the steering wheel, and the guy never locks it- we just opened the door one day and sat down!" and I pulled the key out of my pocket and said "Yeah, too bad you didn't have this...you could have taken the old pig for a drive!"

Well, HappyTruck's motor pretty much died, so I sold it to a friend who is in the process of restoring it. Right now, a '97 Ford Aerostar lurks in front of my house...

Aerostar: S****** all you want, but these vans are VERY cheap! Because of their high NVH [noise, vibration, harshness] factor, they are 25% cheaper than their contemporaries...and also, since these are basically built on a rear-drive '80's Ford minitruck chassis...they are perfect for pulling a small trailer or a boat. $3000 buys a van that rides like a Cadillac and has air conditioning fit to freeze meat-

Normy,

My Airport lot truck is an 88 Pathfinder. Reciently up-graded to rustoilum finish and intermittent imobilizer!

Now did your F100 have keyless entry and keyless ignition? Not carrying around those heavy bulks keys saves .001% burn per hour. Just call me a company man

Mike
