Default Comparing my 93 Mercedes 500e to my 86.5 928

I recently bought a 500e and describing the driving differences. 500e is very quick off the line. When it first came out it was one of the fastest production sedans. Endless power, very good build quality. 0 to 60 in 6 seconds top speed governed at 160.
The 928 is slower off the line, but I knew that. It really comes into its own at much higher speeds. The 928 feels more solid and Rooted to the road. Handles better on curves. There is a 100 horsepower difference.
I feel more settled in the 928. Seating position is lower than the 500e
928 feels more raw. steering lighter in the 500 ,but 928 just feels more solid

I am enjoying both.theb928 just had an intake refresh and feels great
The trans in the 500 is smoother
Still need more time evaluating them both
somehow the 928 feels better designed as a whole grand tourer. 500e has a feel of a base 124 chassis with better suspension and bigger engine and brakes. Still a thrill to punch the 500 and watch people’s reaction
Wondering if anyone here has both these cars

I was looking at the 500e before deciding on the 928, they share a lot of DNA but I preferred the fact the 928 was a ground up design rather than an adapted large volume production car. Working in the 500e engine bay also concerned me, it’s a bit tight :-)
Having proper rear seats makes the the 500e more practical, I’m surprised that the transmissions feel different as I think they are the same 4 speed?

Have you see this video?

I do not own a 500E but owned a '95 E320 with the 24V head for several years and currently own a SL500 with the same M119 engine as the 500E.
The SL is extremely heavy and feels lethargic compared to my S4 Manual, but is a good cruiser.

Nice video clip - superb photography. A friend of mine had one of those MB's over here- for some reason I understood the engine was a 928 engine or an MB derivative of it.

The 500e is a 4 door 928. If I remember correctly, It was partially built by Porsche in Zuffenhausen and finished at Mercedes. It has the same transmission as the 928 auto as it's a 722.3 Mercedes transmission.

The engine is a 5 liter 24v Mercedes motor with similar characteristics as the Porsche 5 liter.

They are great cars, I drove one while I used my S4 as a daily driver, and it was excellent, just felt a bit larger.

The 119 engine was modified later on to a 3 valve design but when plonked in the 500 model it was a 5 litre 32 valver just like the 928S4 and produced the same power as the S4 give or take a pony or two at around 322 bhp. It differed from the 928 in that it had VVT as I recall- apologies if my memory is a bit sketchy.

Fully agree that they were a great car- my friend's example was very tasty.

My 500e has a rebuilt trans ,may explain smoother shifts. My 928 has 100k on trans

There is no "100 hp difference". Is the 500E hot-rodded?

This is a nice video about the 500e that discusses a little bit about Porsche's involvement

Some pertinent info on the MB E500/500E here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_500_E

Owned a 94 MB E600 Renntech and it was a beast. Also a 94 928 GTS. Both were very stable at speed but the E600 would just hunker down a little more (weighed approx 200-250 lbs more than the GTS). Loved them both....in different waysT
