Default Los Angeles to Arcosanti

Hey everyone, I’m planning a trip from Los Angeles to Arcosanti, AZ in July. The car drives great and was recently checked by Precision Motorwerks. Does it sound like a safe area/distance for an 87 928? Thanks!

Why stop at Arizona? I bet you could make it to Maine.

I have a 182K mile 1988 928 that I will be driving 5000 miles for fun in about a month, including a stay over at Sharks in the Badlands. Just drive the car. You'll love it and if it totally breaks down, that is what credit cards and shipping are for. Life's entirely too short!

And back.

Just 'cause it's vintage doesn't mean it's not a Porsche.

Drive it! This will be the best thing for it. If it runs good now, it’ll run great after hours of high speed cruising. I drove my 87 from Memphis to DC several times and it was maintained by me 😂. Yours has been given the green light by Yoda! Drive it like you stole it. Have fun

When I was younger, I would go with no questions asked.

Now that I'm older, and knowing the car is 30+ years old, there's no way I'd take that car.

I wouldn't hesitate to take mine from home in Oregon to the tip of Florida and back, and not worry. If your maintenance is current and everything is working, the run from L.A. to central Arizona will be like a walk in the park. The car is much better suited for that trip than for trudging through Los Angeles traffic. AC working, good tires, a great radar detector are essentials. Enjoy the ride!

Hi coachsteve
I live in Prescott, not far from Cordes Lakes/Arcosanti in AZ. I've driven my 88 many times to and from LA and San Diego, once it completed "rehab". If GB has blessed your 928, you should be mechanically ok. Check your fluids, tires, AC, tunes, radar detector before you start. Once you cross the border into AZ, you can see for miles, the traffic opens up and there are less Highway Patrol. Hence you can, if you want, open the car up a little bit the way our GT cars were meant to travel. If you have problems let me know. There is a good ex Porsche indie mechanic in Prescott at DeYoung Motors. Feel free to PM me.

Throw two or three 53 relays in your glovebox, if they aren’t there already. Never leave home without them! 😂

Why the hell not?

As was noted, if it's been in Precision, and Greg let it leave without saying 'You need this, this and that', then go.

Yes, it's a 30 year old car.
It may have issues.
But then again, so might a brand new one.
Depending on your skills & knowledge, a few spare relays, a relay jumper or two, maybe a few tools.
Or a AAA card. Your choice. (again, not a bad idea with any car)

I took mine from Geen Bay WI (more or less) to Oakland CA & back the second spring I had it (first summer was spent 'sorting it out' and learning that I could trust it).
It's what these cars were made to do.

I drove from Los Angeles to Williams az and back in July or August a few years ago. Car performed flawlessly and didn't miss a beat. It wasn't entirely stress free as the thought of the unpleasantness of breaking down in the middle of nowhere in the summer heat was always lurking in the back of my head. But hey, life is short.

I will mention that I do try to do that dash across the desert in the early morning hours. The car does fine in the heat, but the driver is less tolerant these days if it can be avoided. Particularly important in a Friday afternoon/evening, when the maybe seven hour drive to Phoenix can really get stretched by all of your friends leading the way.

Have you seen my heap ? I have driven this thing all over the place! The front wiring harness is made of speaker wire and electrical tape, the oil pan leaks like a screen door, half the gauges work, the fuel pump screams at 1/4 tank, and I have a nasty vibration over 60mph....so far she has been on a 2 hr ride to the mountains and back, 4 hr ride to Atlanta and back, several 2 hr runs to SC and back, 7hr ride to DC, and most recent, 4.5hr to Helen, GA and back....all without Greg Brown touching it....so if he even looked at yours, I’d take that sucker to the moon and back!

I would not hesitate to go. I was reminded today how great these cars are, even at age. 160,000 miles and many runs to redline reminded me of how great these engine sounds when wound up

Get AAA Premier. It’s 125 bucks and gives you 200 miles on a flatbed if needed plus like 3 other 100 mile calls.

It gives me piece of mind when my young Heart says DRIVE!! and my common sense tells me to remember how old the car is.
