Question What were the original wheel colors?

I imported this 1990 928S4 from Japan last year. It has only 50000km (31000miles) and these appear to be original miles as the car is in outstanding condition. Everything works. I am finishing up a timing belt and water pump change and replacing some rubber bits.

Question; it came with body colored wheels. Would this have been a factory option? I restore most of my cars to factory spec and will do the same to these wheels if indeed these body colored wheels are incorrect.

Thanks!

I believe they may be factory. I remember seeing an 87 S4 at a new car auto show and it had white painted wheels to match the white of the car. Always loved the look, but looking at your pic I think I would prefer a silver wheel. I will tell you I hate the black wheel look so take what I said with a grain of salt.

There is a permanent VIN Check Thread at the top of the main 928 Forum page. Post your VIN and see what comes back.

I would think that they are not factory, but that’s just based on my observations over the years. Body colored wheels were a thing later on though, I’ve seen many in the infamous jellybean colors. To speak against that though, there were a lot of cars ordered by the Japan market that had unusual options, this car could easily be in that category.

Those look like the correct 7 and 8-inch wide slotted/manhole cover wheels. I've never seen an S4 with anything other than silver (and rarely, platinum) anodized slotted/manhole cover wheels. The factory would paint D90s and Cup 1s, but not manhole covers. But post your VIN in the options thread and we can see whether there's a wheel-specific option code called out.

""The factory would paint D90s and Cup 1s, but not manhole covers""..............

I though that the factory either painted them(silver mostly) or anodized them in the light bronze tint.

And after spending years around porsches,I have seen cars optioned with almost anything that a customer is willing to pay for.

Dealers did all sorts of things to wheels, and I'd bet that the early Exclusive department did too and I've just never seen such an example. AFAIK all manhole cover wheels leaving Zuffenhausen were anodized.

I know a picture of a factory red S4 with red rims, taken around 1986/87.
If this is factory done, it should appear into the Z-order list, and only a Porsche dealership, a importer or Porsche AG could confirm.
What is the VIN of the car?

I have seen an earlier 928S with factory painted dish wheels. It was a “works” car though. Porsche would customize anything for you if you are willing to pay for it. Best. Is to check the tag in the service book or in the trunk. Otherwise it’s silver.

I'm not a fan of manhole wheels in general but it looks killer in that color combo. It would be pretty if they are some sort of a Special Wishes option.

1987 or 1988 S4 at the entrance of Weissach. This is certainly a 1987, from the others pictures taken the same day.

I've seen quite a few early cars in grand prix white that had white-centered phone dials with silver rim. I haven't seen other colors on phone dials. Does anyone have information on this?
