Strong Fuel smell at Start Up
With Blumaxx - 78 MY, CIS. Strong smell of gas when starting up and driving. I've had warm idle issues, and my mechanic tweaked the idle last year, but now I get a gas smell. Obviously a running very rich scenario. What are the steps, and what can be done to cure the idle issue but keep it from running so rich?

first is it a leak or is it rich from the exhaust?
If your smelling fuel from the driver seat after startup you would be wise to investigate , remove the aircleaner as well looking for wet lines

It doesnt take much gas to produce and odor. I use toilet paper and place it under or around all the connections as part of my leak check. A drop my go unnoticed but you will see it for sure when it hits the TP and is absorbed.

it's exhaust related. No leaks.

how does it run when its warmed up?If still ricj=h then a slight adjustment to the mixture screw might be in order,
otherwise put a bottle of techron in the fuel,
as well as 6 oz of MMO,
and an oz and half of Startron

I have had the same problem with an 83SC. After a great deal of trial and error searching, I replace the fuel hose. expensive but less from Griffiths. After that, no fuel smell at all. The hose looked fine but when removed, you could tell that it was releasing fumes. outer shell smelled like benzina. Part no.

Do you push on the throttle or just turn the key?
How much cranking is required to start the car?
Does it start instantly or take several seconds of cranking? (Cold and hot.)

Howdy.
If it's a "raw gas" smell don't forget to check that top seal around the gas tank, you get at it from the cargo compartment..

However, when warm (hot), sometimes it does not start so easy, and I do have to apply some pressure to the gas pedal. Not a lot, but a little. Only when the car is fully warmed up does this happen, and mostly on hot days (if that matters?). Then it wants to stall at red lights, etc. The idle wants to drop off. Again, not always, just when hot and usually on hot days. My indy has balanced the system in the past with guages (he is very well versed in CIS Porsche systems, including 928 - former certified Porsche mechanic - I don't question his abilities). He has tweaked the throtle screw, and that helped a little bit, but I cannot get the symptoms to repeat for him. The car has never left me stranded.

When it happened to me a couple months ago it was the fuel pump leaking.
I was smelling gas when driving especially with the sunroof opened and after some time it started having issues cranking cold, than cold and warm.
I noticed by accident that the car was dripping gas while idling.
Changed the fuel pump, issues gone and better idling.
Switch the car on, and go check the rear for gas drops.

Fuel pump and filter are new within the past two years, and no leaks anywhere. I'm wondering if it is a regulator (maybe the WUR?)
