Default 1979 Hellblau Black 5spd

This beauty found it's way into my garage and I am back into a driving 928. Some may remember I have an 85 that started with an intake refresh and turned into a motor that is still on the stand.

I saw Stan's recent find in Garnet and it's already been rebuilt in like a day and a half - sigh...

Back to the Hellblau - this is a beautiful example 2 owner car. First owner for 20 years and 2nd owner for 20 years and now it's up to me.

Previous owners took amazing care of this car - as always they need continual maintenance but this one has records back to 1982...

75000 miles

Came with original workshop manuals - nice

Has had a recent clutch including every nut bolt shim/PP/TOB the works
TB/WP
Front seats recovered - look phenomenal

Car has been updated with 84 spindles and bigger brakes
Has MSDS equal length headers and Stainless exhaust all the way back.
Engine bay dry as a bone
Paint was resprayed in 86'. Still holding up but could use some attention. To be honest I am glad the paint is not perfect or I'd be worried sick about driving it.

Drove the car home from Michigan with the following items not working:

Cruise
Wipers
Antannae wont retract
No pod lights
Intermittent Voltage gauge
Clutch that is brand new - shifts like butter until its high revs then does not want to go into gear

Hot start issue - unplugged the cold start injector and that seems to have done the trick - now to find out the cause either sticking Cold Start injector or thermotime switch
Even after unplugging the Cold Start Injector I could still smell raw fuel after shut off?
Hot start with CSI unplugged started fine but there was a "grinding noise" that sounded like it came from the rear? Made no sense only heard it once and I just got the car so I will have to research it.
Plan is to do an intake refresh so I can get it cleaned up although engine bay is in great shape already - could be better and some lines are hard/swollen

Day One and ordered from Roger:
Battery Ground Strap
New Electrical Harness
A/C "slider"/Button that broke off clip

I absolutely love this car. Have had 3 85's. This one has a lot less power but it runs like a top. If I can get the clutch sorted I will be in good shape.

Thanks all, Every time I get in it I rub it a bit more ; ) I should have bought stock in Lexol!

So lots of items need fixed. The car is still a gem and the maintenance is really incredible as I've been going through all the receipts.

Still needs some imperative items. Fuel lines are happening immediately, I can smell raw fuel directly by the coolant reservoir, that can't be good.

Power steering hoses happening immediately. No driving until these are completed.

I hate to even go down this path of WYAIT, that's how the '85 started and now the motor is on a stand.

I don't have a choice on the fuel lines, and the power steering hose is now a no brainer. I am installing a new FOE engine harness.

Hopefully these items ensure this piece of history does not go up into a ball of flames.

From there I will work into all the other small items that are just standard.

Game on

Thanks everyone for the kind words on this awesome 79.

Crawled under it a bunch this weekend. New Wiring harness installed from Roger/Sean R. Beautifully made, my 79 cable though did not have the wiring for the air valve on the strut brace.

Had to cut solder mine into the new loom : ( No instructions came with my harness, was fairly straightforward but it could have answered some questions on routing along the way i.e. where to strat feeing the cable.

I ended up feeding down behind the right cam cover first and then backfeeding the 14 pin cable to the fender as it was too difficult to try and feed it all under the thermostat area.

Old cable was garbage/14 pin connector i pulled off very gently and was already cracked in half.

Oil soaked and dry cracked/corroded

Seen it's day...

New cable did not come with this harness

Wishing the new cable would have come with these hold downs/clamps. Also the rubber isolators. I found one behind the cam tower and also one down by the starter area but no way they would go over the new cable.

New : ) You will see my green cable with exposed ends. That will have to be replaced.

On to my next steps:
Ignition Switch
Fuel Feed and Return Lines/Greg Brown - absolutely love these pieces
Power steering hose - Pressure side

And...

Can anyone pinpoint where this trans fluid leak is coming from...

There is a distinct line of fluid that looks like oil is being slung from the drive axle flange area, or it's dripping down onto the axle and being slung. Hard for me to tell.

At any rate I will do my best to clean it and see where it goes.

More work completed:

Added Spacers - huge difference in appearance and handling

Without spacer

With 1.5" spacer

Also working on shifter linkage - front ball cup was rubber - replaced it with the I believe poly bushing from Roger. Also replaced the bushings in the rear shift coupler.

I've seen this in other posts but always worth mentioning when installing the front ball cup bushing - make sure the lip is pressed fully into the ball cup.

Now I am working to put the shifter linkage/shift lever/springs etc back together inside the car. I searched and found no tips/tricks, got frustrated and took a break.

Any suggestions? I am having trouble holding it all together under spring pressure to get the retaining clips slid on.

Extra gratuitous pic ; )

Prior to spacer install, still have to take a final exterior shot with the spacers

I had a car this color a 79 5 speed with 175 k miles on it
It was rattle free and drove perfectly,
I should have never sold it.
Your car appears to be sitting lower than normal,
it might be time to add new shocks and reset the ride height back to spec

Agree it sits very low, too low. There have been 3 owners total including myself now, and I believe the original owner may have lowered the car.

Not sure on that and have not looked into what is spec ride height or adjustment. Oil pan and headers are barely off the ground and it's been on my mind for a while.

MrMerlin any advice on getting the shifter back together?

Agree on this year and color combo being a beauty. I've always kicked myself for selling my other 2 928's and hopefully learned my lesson to keep this one.

maybe the CV joint throwing grease. My 78 has early style joints and someone only put 2 gaskets in them (1each) instead of 4 (2 each).

agree it very much seems to be the axle grease.

Current issue is shifter linkage, not for lack of trying i cant get it together, spring pressure is really high.

Tried this

can't get the wire over the shifter "sleeves"
Would love to drive the car this weekend, any advice on how to get this shifter reinstalled?

use some carpet thread and tie next to each wire then cut the wire.

Got it done. Used picture wire, took a bit but I got to drive the car this weekend.

Promptly pulled it back in the garage and removed the spider. Intake has oil in the v and i still have a hot start issue. Will pull the runners and get injectors, will also install my oil baffle.

I bought Greg Brown oil baffle for my 85 and need to see if it will work on the 79.

Daunting task to get a list of needed parts for the intake refresh. May actually do it in a couple rounds so I can get used to all the bits and pieces. Overwhelming at this stage plus i don't want a massive tear down. Car runs really well now so I'm thinking anything rubber plus injector rebuild or new.
