I also replaced the original shocks on my '87 S4 with red Koni's. Thanks to Mr. Merlin's help and advice I fixed that issue using JB Weld:

The size difference is a few millimeters. There is a small thicker part on the bottom of the shock, so 2 different measurements:

I put the sleeve over the shock and applied tape outside of the part where the sleeve sits on the shock:

I then mixed the JB Weld, and put a layer on the shock between the two pieces of tape. Then slid the collar on the shock, wiped off the access JB Weld, took the tape off and wiped the edges clean:

The sleeve now sits tight on the shock and can be adjusted when needed!

Good luck….!!!!

Did the same on a clinic car. Except for the wait to dry, no issues.

That car was back in less than a month to have the Koni's removed. Teeth rattling. Not related to gluing the sleeves on.

Best bet get a set of Bilstiens they come with new adjuster collars and lower perches,
NOTE so you dont have to swap over old parts that dont fit or buy new parts that dont fit.
Just because the Konis cost a bit less does not mean they really are.
NOTE the Black top cap Bilstiens do not ride as stiff as the previous silver cap versions that were sold 15 years ago
