Cruise Control Problem on my 84?

So the other day I was trying to engage my cruise control. I had some problems with it when I first got the car. When I tried cruise control when I first got the car the car would just accelerate until I had cancelled it. Just recently I had replaced the brake booster check valve and cruise control started to work properly, but just a couple days when I took out for a ride I was bored and testing everything on the car and cruise control just gave up completely. I have a couple questions? Does cruise control only engage at certain speed (P.S. I would try to engage around 55-60 MPH). If that's not the problem, is the cruise control main module the problem or is something else please let me know below.
Thank you

There is a detailed diagnostic procedure in the WSM.
Follow those first.
If all of that checks out, then it's likely to be the brain box.
Sometimes the circuit board solder joints can be reflowed and fixed.
From the stuff I've read on here, success for reflowing is about 50%.
Roger has rebuilt brain boxes, as noted above.
Those are reported to be good quality replacements.

Ordered a rebuilt brain from Roger and sent 2 old ones in ($50 each for core). Put the new one in and it works perfect. First time car has had cruise during my ownership. ( since 2006)

Hey guys thank you all for the suggestions. I figured out it was the brain. I have an NOS unit that got back in the day. Will install on my free time. Took it for a ride yesterday and the brain has a mind of its own it will maintain the speed for a couple minutes then give up and then cancel it and again it will do that over again it. It's cancel and accelerates fine. Thank you all for the help.
