Default S4 heads

I bought this engine about 4 years ago as pictured, which had been removed from a fire damaged S4 from a breakers, it was cheap at the time and i kept it as a "just in case" engine
first thing i did when i got it home was to drain the coolant out of the block, then put it on the stand and left it in my garage.

with the lockdown now in place i finally get the time to strip it down.
endfloat good, waterpump surface of block good, pistons and liners good and bottom end is all good, so at least i have a good block.

just a couple of questions:

1) Does the pannel think it would be worthwhile to skim the heads -corrosion on the fire ring part, or scrap them
2) How many miles would the pannel guess this engine has done?

The waterpump has a date of 1999 printed on it and looking at the wear on the cam chain tensioner pads- it can just be felt with the finger nail- if it had done 200k miles what sort of wear would you expect?

Now more than ever i know i need to do the head gaskets on the SE

cheers and stay safe
Phil

Do you know the history of that motor? How long was it sitting with coolant in it till you bought it?

More pictures of the heads would be interesting, if nothing else for a point of reference.

The cylinders in the block are in great shape, but as to how long the engine had been sat or when the last time the coolant was changed before it caught fire, i have no idea.
i will try and take some better pictures and see if i can put a DTI gague on the corrosion to see an exact depth into the head.

stay safe and well

cheers

You need to post a picture of the pad that is on the thrust side (the moving part) of the tensioner. That one looks like it’s the fixed pad.

Heads: It’s hard to tell how bad heads are before they’ve been soda blasted. But, your posted pictures show - like MrMerlin wrote —-^ - that those heads need to be welded (etc.)

Cam gears and tensioner pads say, "80,000-100,000 miles".

The oil pump gear says "60,000-80,000 miles."

I'd take a wild guess and say 80,000 miles.

After much searching in my records i found i bought it 6 years ago, time just flies the older you get...

I bought it from a Porsche breaker in the UK for £400 and invoice stated came from an S4 with 88k miles on it.

The other side of the cam tensioner has very slightly more wear but if you did not know 928 engines they would look like no reason to change them

Impressive knowledge of what parts look like at what milage Greg.

cheers
Phil

one more quick question to the great and good:

how prone are S4 engines for piston rings sticking when an engine has been stood for 6 years?, ie this one.
the bores look ok and no water had got into them.

cheers
Phil

They don't really stick so long as coolant hasn't gotten to them. Put some MMO in each bore and crank it over by hand to be sure.

Best Advice is to pull all pistons.

Absolutely.
Also get the block decked [machine the head gasket surface]. After the heads are repaired they should be perfect, sad to put them back on a block that may not be. It's a great time to get everything balanced before re-assembly.
