Nothing is the same, all different. I am going to try to post pics of my 83, but this site always fights me when I try to attach pictures. Just so happens that my 83 row is sitting over my pit right now.

thanks Billu those pictures are very helpful to me.
Glad to assist.
I just dropped the front muffler, replaced it with used and fixed a trans cooler line leak. I will attach a picture of the original muffler, which had been cut, crimped and welded into a section of catalytic converter, probably when the car was federalized. I did a lot of research. Nothing on any American 928 is the same, and so no aftermarket either readily available here.
I ended up getting a used front muffler from the U.K.
I imagine the front muffler on the ROW cars may be better than a X-pipe? As far as I know that muffler is open between banks, letting exhaust pressure bleed to the pipe with lower pressure with less/no drone. Has anybody tried a muffler like this on a S4 or newer instead of at X-pipe? Or is there no room?

This is the same kind of muffler used on any 1987 to 1989 RoW 928 without catalytic converter.
Officially, the output is the same, and only the fuel consumption is a little lower.
Unofficially, the sound is better

The front one is a muffler too on non-cat cars.. and it definitely muffles. My RoW 87 S4 is super stealthy (has the stock front and rear muffler, and the stock large resonators too)
