Default How to spot fake Bosch injectors - 30lb 4 hole later generation

Recently I had the bad experience of having realised that I had been sold fake Bosch injectors.

The injectors had issues ranging from low fuel supply to intermittent firing which resulted in engine running problems.

I wanted to show what a real Bosch injector and a fake one look like side by side as it can be difficult to tell the real one apart.

In these pictures the real injector is the brighter red one. There are a few differences

Colour of the body is slightly darker on the fake
The fake only has part numbering on one side
The real injector has a tiny round Bosch logo on one side
The fake injector has a blue sealing ring at the top.
The real Bosch injector comes in a genuine Bosch box with plastic covers protecting either end of the injector

Although the fake injectors do work to some degree the fact that the quality is so poor work lead me to believe that they will not last long as the materials look lower grade than the real thing which could have serious consequences for your engine.

Buyers beware

I've been seeing a lot of fake parts on sites like Ebay. Coil Over Plugs seem to be popular, they are crap and totally worthless.

Got burned a year or so ago on an idle stabilizer valve. The end was so misshaped I couldn't plug in the connector and when I cut it away the car barely ran. Cutting it open showed a basic joke, picked up a real one from a vendor.

Annoying to see it spreading into the Porsche world. Where did you pick up the fake?

Unfortunately not all are even that obvious. A few years ago a friend showed me a set of green Bosch 42lb injectors that were Chinese knockoffs. Visually there was no way to tell them apart from a real set, color matched and everything.

Going forward, any new injector I receive will be flow benched before ever going in a car. The counterfeits have made their way into too many supply chains.

Were these installed on your new engine and on the dyno?

Marti,

Are you running the real deal injectors now?

Would this explain the "missing" dyno horses you were looking for/expecting?

The bad injectors were installed for the dyno run. With the Shark Tuner I was remapping which in some ways masked the problem but did not remove it. This was why at idle the engine seemed to stumble.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. I was considering upgrading my injectors for my ongoing project. In the end I didn't but this risk didn't even factor into my thinking! I am way too naive...

I was sold something I didn’t actually ask for and which was supposed to be Bosch and at the time I didn’t know any better
