excellent stabilization to get both pics to transition smoothly. The shifter is an interesting idea. How is it different.

It's really that short. Almost comically short compared to the factory shifter.

Shift effort is higher, but not annoyingly so, and it feels a lot more precise. Before I felt like there was too much left-right play and it is diminished quite a bit now. I was shocked at how much shorter it was, though. When I finished installing it, I couldn't help but laugh. It looks like someone accidentally sat on the shifter and it collapsed.

Sorry that I missed your question, Tom! The distance between the lever's pivot and the shift rod is increased in the short shifter. This increases the distance that the shift rod moves in relation to the movement of the shift lever, which reduces the throws. The overall length of the lever is shorter as well.

Jon,
Nice..ah.. vertical shifting! it's sure to catch on in some (hind) quarters.
Actually, looks very nice.
Last summer, I preformed a 'stickectomy' on my '80 - cutting ~3" off, recutting the securing grooves for the ****, and pushed it back together: probably the most satisfying mod I ever made.
As your experience, the shift effort difference is negligible: an advantage of the kit being the altered pivot points.
Anyway, definitely adds to the pleasure of shifting.

Here is a picture depicting the difference between the GT shifter and the short shifter. I did the install and like it quite a bit. In the case of the GT it does not really "shorten" the shifter as it does "shorten the throw"

Garth,

I did the same thing to my 79 about a year or 2 ago. Took off about 3 inches give or take. What a difference!

I also installed a GTS 1 piece ****/boot. Instead of a shift of a lever, it's more like a flick of the wrist. I love the look of the GTS boot. It completely updates the feel and look of the shifter! Goes well with the Momo steering wheel.
If anyone wants pics, email me at

cschreib@eesus.jnj.com

I still can't figger out how to post! Too damn busy working on my car to learn how to do It!!!
