water pump/timing belt, cam timing 84
I looked over a few different threads before replacing my broken water pump recently. I noticed some confusion about why the marks on the cam pulleys might be off one way or another when the flywheel lock is on at exact top dead center.
I didn't see anywhere anyone clearly saying which side of the mark the notch on the camshaft pulley should be (because isn't probably not going to be dead on). It seems to me that with the belt being stretched by pressure on the right side of the pulleys (facing the engine from the front), the notches on the pulleys need to be a minute or two past the mark. The crank is going to turn and stretch the belt so that it advances relative to the camshafts, even with belt tension properly adjusted. It seems to me that the notch would more likely need to align with the red dots on the photo....is this wrong?

Since the rear aluminum housing moves around a certain amount on it's mounting bolts, just get the marks on the gear to line up with the aluminum housing as close as possible.

hmmm...i didn't know that. so if the housing is moved to the left, an someone aligns to the left of the mark, they could be off a tooth...which would mean the car would run, but pretty badly
