Default 25 years since the last 928 was built!

Wow, time flies... There have been no 928's built for 25 years!

I recall seeing a brand new 1995 black over black 928 GTS for sale at Contemporary Cars in Orlando, Florida back in 1996. The dealer was trying pretty hard to move this car, pricing it at nearly $10,000 below the sticker. Simultaneously, over at North Northam's enthusiast shop there was a consigned 1990 silver over sand 928 GT with 26k on it that he was basically giving way at $28,000! The GT's first owner was a less than respectful young college kid and had often had his wet dog jump into the car after waterskiing... The copious leather in the interior was starting to curl up in the quarter glass and the car needed someone to give it some love. Eventually I was approached to buy it at $18,000 but passed and purchased a beautiful 1990 911 C4 to replace my non-AC 72 911.

Regrettably, I passed on both of these 928's even though I could and should have bought them both... Fast forward - I bought that same 1990 GT in 2002 with 92k on it for $14k, and even worse sunburn (but with decent mechanical maintenance). That is how it became an "Outlaw" --- it was cosmetically flawed.

But what if I had grabbed them both and driven the GT and stored the GTS and kept it factory fresh?

Nostalgia has a way of making us think we should have done things we would have regretted for most of the years that have passed between the decision and today...

That black 928 GTS would have fallen in value from the low $80's to less than $30 from 1999 through 2016 or so. Yes, underwater the whole time... Today, the undertaking would just be breaking even if I were able to have stored it inexpensively, performed obligatory fluids/belt maintenance myself and ignored full value insurance costs. It would probably be the only zero mile 928 GTS on the planet. Hmmmmm, perhaps there would indeed be profit - minus the cost of investment opportunities elsewhere...

But, that is not what happened.

What were you guys doing in 1995 that prevented you from buying one of the last GTS's - and were you tempted?

Should be some interesting stories!

I was in college, with no car. A 928, of any ilk, was unobtainium.

Did they build any '95 models in '95. If so what month was the last one off the line?

Me too. First year of college, was driving a '77 CJ5 with a 304V8 that I bought for 2K. At that time, a 928 would've cost more than all four years of tuition and housing.

In '95 I was driving a '93 Ford Ranger pick-up truck as my DD and had a '88 Toyota Supra Turbo as my summer/fun car.

I was working in a paper mill (still is!) as my main job and also had a small sign shop at home as my part time job. I closed the business in 2015.

I remember back then "dreaming" of owning a 928 some day.

Bought mine in 2005 and still living the dream...

In today's money a bare-bones '95 GTS would be around $150,000. In 1995 the 928's sticker price was 'dream money.'

In 1995 I was one year full-time at my start-up. Me and the other two partners were paying ourselves just above "Ramen Noodle" wages.

A year earlier an old lady had totaled our '88 VW 16v Scirocco that CarChick bought new in '89. My DD was a VR6 GTI not because I really liked it but because nothing else in the Ramen Noodle Tax Bracket was closer to a 16v Scirocco. (CarChick was in the middle of her one and only 'truck' experiment: a 5-speed Manual Isuzu Rodeo.)

There was a Pet Store at which we bought cat food, litter, etc., a couple of blocks from where we lived prior to '95 The owner had a black-on-black GTS (auto with the ubiquitous at the time Apline stereo and 'brick' mobile phone) and - when he was on-site - always parked right next to the entrance in a special extra-wide space. I'm pretty sure that GTS still has, somewhere, some of my saliva on it.

In '97 I bought my '91GT. At the time it was a stupid financial decision. I'm so glad I took Joel's mantra to heart: "Sometimes you just gotta say what the F#$k!"

Got my PhD in July 1995, and went back to med school a week later. Started clinical rotations, there was a black GTS that parked in the doctor's lot at St Luke's in the Texas Medical Center, I'd walk by it on the way into clinic. I do remember thinking, 'some day, some day'....

My daily at the time was a blue '89 Honda Civic. Today my daily is a blue '09 Honda Civic. Progress!

Contemporary Cars is where my ‘91 S4 was first sold. Sticker was $84K. In ‘91 I was driving my ‘86 Celica GT which I paid $12K for new. By ‘95 I had stepped up to a ‘94 Camry V6 ($18k), one of the greatest cars of all time. A 928 was about as feasible as a trip to the moon powered by flapping my arms. But eventually the 928 price came down to near the Camry’s - the rest as they, is history.

In 95 I drove a Taurus SHO and had my 67 Austin Healey 3000 as my toy but was on the look for a 928. Finally found it browsing the Boston Globe (no internet car sites at the time!) Saturday night and found a 89 S4 (24k mikes/$24k) for sale at Malden Motorsports. Went that night and bought it. Went to ”British Days” at Larz Anderson auto museum on Sunday morning and had the Healey sold in 5 hours!

Started out my Porsche life with a 1972 911T, then on to four 928s and three more 911s. 1.1 million miles in Porsches so far!

In 1995, I was still a student and one of the last 928 sold in France was waiting for a owner in the Le Mans Porsche Center. It was a slate grey automatic 1995 GTS.

I bought my first 928 (the baltic blue 1989 CS) at the beginning of 1999.

I was 10 years into my engineering career, and already had a deposit on the soon to be released 986. Porsche was most likely planning the reconfiguration of the 928 factory to build this new roadster. Both of mine were probably built by the same people, albeit 10 years apart.

In 1995 I was daily driving my 1988 CRX si and having a lot of fun and getting some wide-eyed looks on track days at Gingerman, Grattan & Road America with my 1993 Lighting.
But every year I made my way to the Chicago Auto Show and headed straight over to the Porsche display to spend a long time walking around and around the GTS on display thinking that one day I'll have a 928 in my garage. 24 years later, and my dream finally became a reality.

In June of 1995, I was 5+ long years into my startup electronics manufacturing business and had been working 90+ hours/week for each of those 5 years.
I was daily driving a 1989 Jeep Cherokee with over 400K miles as it also served as the company delivery vehicle. I also had a 1987 928 as a play car but had absolutely no no time to drive it.
My partner and I accepted an unsolicited bid to buy our company and negotiated as part of the purchase contract, a clause allowing us to replace our vehicle(s) as they knew I had burned up the jeep in the building of the business
I located my Midnight blue manual 1995 GTS sitting on the sales floor of the local Porsche dealer and purchased it as my "replacement" vehicle.
CEO of the purchasing company wasn't upset as he was a Porsche fanatic himself and only asked for ride in my new GTS.
Still have it to this day; 25 years later...

95 I was still driving my 87 944S. Prices on the 928's had gone from a bit more than the 944 to insane prices, so I put any thoughts on upgrading on eternal hold.

Still have the 944S :-)
