Default Separating seat back.

I'm going to redeye a set of seats and want to remove the back rest of the seat to get thorough coverage when I spray.

Any gotches to removeing the back. I don't need it all apart... Just so I can better access the area between the two parts. It just looks like one of those things that will never go back together the same way again.

well every thing I have found appears to be for manual seats.

these power seats have a helical shaft on either side.. you don’t just undo 4 bolts, 2 cables and separate the back from the bottom. ?

once I see myself removing hog rings I’m probably on a slippery slope.

Here's a couple pictures that may help. As simple as it seems, I recommend taking a lot of pictures as you go so you know where the hog rings, staples, and frame "prongs" go. I also put paint marks so I knew how things should line up when I put the back and bottom together.

After you separate the back from the bottom, the only other tricky thing was removing the seat release ****. I think I did the wrap a cord around it and quickly pull technique.

I'm pretty sure I used the claw of a hammer to hook the head of the screw and pull it out. I'd wait 'til someone else chimes in though. It was 8 years ago when I did this and I'd hate to see you do any damage.

Edit: Here's a picture of the other seat. Looking at the screw threads, it looks like I used a hammer claw to pull it out. Then again, maybe it was something stupid easy like raising the seat lever...

Thnx...you’ve been a great help already.

it seems like there is a circlip or something on the side inside of the seat...it just seems that solid when I try to pull it.

what does that part look like when it is completely removed...it has a spiral/helical twist to it correct.?

ive got the little rubber grommet out on each side also.

Hi Tony,

I've had the same problem, and and found that the rod was twisted along it's axle:

Had to use a small saw to cut it in half while still in the seat! It was the driver' s seat by the way.....

Good luck!

cheers,

Manfred

^^^ thnx..

Well there is the problem. That shaft is NOT supposed to be twisted then.....I can see that mine are. There is no way they will pull straight out in that case.

i would have to cut them in half as they enter the actual back of the seat then separate the seat back and pull both halves out of there respective side of the assembly, like you did. ...ugh..

id imagine it would take quite a bit of force to twist it...or...a small amount consistently over 30 yrs . That’s what has happened.

Mark...you have 4 of these shafts that are not twisted by chance ???

Well THAT was a pain in the ***.

not too bad once I figured out what had to be done. Hacksaw blade did the trick.

the shafts were twisted on mine to the point where they wouldn’t pull out also.

now to clean and re-dye

thnx guys...
