Default Regularity rally car

as i'm building a 928 rally car and may now , 2020, forget my usual BMW CS ,as new '20 regulations demand tech inspection , and they have to be oem !…. i'm tempted to buy a latest model manual 16 valve… and update that one as far as tech control is allowing . I will not go 32V , to complicated for minor gain imho.
I even have a good '82 16V spare "race" engine & .. a manual transaxle from my parts car , a '90 GT.

Ok, we are down so far to 2 options , both 928S1 from '82 . Must decide "quick" as the first regularity we want to participate is already 15/16 Februari.

My personal wishes are :

Must be manual
16V , prefer K-Jetronic above LH. I'm not fond of 35 year old ECU's/injectors etc from the first generation ….
Old school dizzy … not the twin with LH
the 4.7 l
Decent black leather interior , sure not beige or brown .
If… LSD
exterior colour not that important , i like the classic ones , but not brown or green.
Trouble free, a good runner to begin with
Prefer info about the clutch ( renewed either or not , and when )
Non sun roof , as for some "closed road" specials we need to wear a helmet
Tires/wheels not important , as i have Cup wheels with Toyo's for it

Engine Mileage i have no idea …. what is acceptable to have the best chances ?? I assume less important for the car itself (if there is a engine replaced , i don't care about matching # )

I read here most problems with engine/clutch/TT/transaxle … not so much with the car ( suspension/brakes /body ) except electric issues and the "normal" maintenance.

TB & Water pump is "normal" maintenance , no big deal if it has to be done due age.

Any other important items i forget to look at ? not afraid of the work involved, i do it all myself , more the $$$$.

I feel bad. I bought your LH intake parts. Not using the injection parts. My EFI project will use other injectors.

I have an '83 5spd 16v that would be perfect for you. No title, so it is destined to be a parts car here in Texas.
Oh. And the fact that you are in Belgium!

Ad, yes a LH injection system seems very expensive to maintain…. if i see the prices for FPR's… MAF (omg)...injectors NLA.... many parts only as rebuild exchange etc....
and all this from the first generation 's injection. ECU... wires…
I see a very nice one in Germany … '85 … so LH … nogo , sure not for a "oldtimer" now , all this to have better MPG and 10 HP ….

i stick with a K-Jetronic … worst case , a new pump , is 1000 € , even if + the flow meter at 750 € . Not yet the cost of only a LH MAF....!
For oldtimers i like to keep it as simple as possible , rally car build i even went with carb's ...the more complex it "was" 35 years ago , the more problems now.

Jason , pity you are in Texas

Barry, If you are looking for a complete 4.7S engine, you can find one for sure at garage Wams in Eindhoven, Frawi in Hengelo or van Zweeden in Middelburg. All of them in the Netherlands.
I can only offer you my spare 4,5L without heads, no camshafts, no intakes, no fuel dustributor, not run in 30 years or so. Well preserved with plenty of dirty oil everywhere.

Ad, or anybody…. if i buy a '84/'85 "LH" car and something go's bad with those "expensive" pieces … can i convert it to K-Jetronic ? I have all the pieces on a spare engine … but only see the mechanical parts… don't know if the wiring is OK to be used for both ? Without the ECU , will the dashboard still work ??

Well, just my thoughts, (and guesswork) since these cars are very analog and also have some on/off sensors that make or break signals, in theory most functionality of the dash could work with either engine, just as long as the correct sensors are in place. The rev counter is the one that is probably the hardest to get the correct signal to. But for this there are alternatives you can locate in another space next to the pod. The speedometer runs from the back of the trans so should be operative.

Do you need some of the parts back I bought from you?

Well, this would give me a big setback. So far I converted the throttle body adding a throttlevalve positioning sensor (the old one is a switch, not a sensor), added a combined MAP-temp sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) to the intake body, polished the intake runners and intake body. Removed the injectors (but have them in a box, not of use to me). Cleaned the fuel rail (not of use to me). Bought an old CIS aor elbow without the fuel distributor and without throttle body and gutted it because of no use for barn door (the MAP-temp sensor gives the required signal).

The mounting plates are a kind of prototypes. The final mounting plates will be a lot nicer.

MAP-temp sensor in place

Throttle positioning sensor in place

Cleaned and painted intake runner

Old CIS elbow, barndoor taken out.

So I hope you will be achieve your goals with a CIS system.

haha, if i see all this…. i prefer CIS. All those sensors need wires … and ECU's to run it....

good luck with your project !

Yes ! car is home …. i bought yesterday the one in Germany , a '82 S1 but with a low mileage '84 S2 engine ( only 27k kilometers ) on which they mounted the '82 K-Jetronic and single dizzy … also a S4 transaxle with LSD .! perfect , as i would have build it.
Drove it directly 400 miles home without any hesitation , idles nice, pulls strong , shifts smooth .
Everything works , no sunroof ( helmets on regularity stages ) and i even love the colour , perfect interior . .
Now change wheels to cups with Toyo's , steering wheel, and make a extra dashboard for our Terratrip's /map reading lamp
I have a new set S4 brakes but think to mount them later …. next weekend we already have our first rally … will see IF time... and all parts are here . Rotors/pads are "new" but of course the '82 single pot calipers. O well , it will work also for once.

Not "cheap" but i'm very happy with the deal ! Test drove some country roads this afternoon and surprized how well it steers .

damned , 1 week was short to work … still a lot of work to do now at 7 pm and "must" start the rally tomorrow at 7 am….. i can only hope i have all parts in house now…. at least my ex-rally BMW new "winter" tires are moved to Porsche rims today … so i'm relaxed having those , seen the forecast rain ( = corners mud ) conditions this weekend's 550 miles regularity rally.

2 days long , dark , rain and mud.... but we ended our first rally with the 928 !
We could not go for a "top 10" , once in France , to much "off road" specials , was not possible to keep up with average speed with the car's oem suspension. Bottom was hitting hard.....
On the race track special , the Porsche was better in his "habitat ".
No tech problems , besides one fuse that melts and car dies. I think the fuel pump. It's the "bad" contact "fuse to holder" that seems to get very hot and melts the plastic , the fuse itself doesn't blow.
Will clean all those holders and new fuses….

Some pre start pics … will post later on pics as they come on line .

Meanwhile i have 4 wheels 9 x 17" , ET70 and ET47. 2 spares ET 70 , can use them in the rear with 21 mm spacers. Tires 245/40 fit nice.
Must look for stiffer and longer springs , car must be 2" higher. ( sump now at a scary 4 " )

Made a wooden trunk cover , will see tomorrow for some "carpet" to glue on. Fits just for 2 spare wheels and of course jack, tools, and our personal gear .
Don't know if that was ever available from Porsche ??
