Default S4 GT and GTS Intake - different?

Are the '87 and on intake manifolds different? Isn't an S4 intake the same as a GTS intake?

regards,
Sab.

It's my understanding that the 87 & up intakes are all the same - only the air tubes varied with the GTS having a foam rubber insulation on them.

That's what I thought. I have someone interested to buy one of my intakes and he said he was sure his GTS intake is different from an S4 intake (???). I recently bought one to many and need to sell it (running out of garage space).

I KNOW that the GT and the GTS have the same part numbers. Not sure about the S4's though.

Do you know the part number?
Thanks,
Sab.

I'm quite late on this thread but have a few questions. I have a bastard 89 S4 with GT cams indexed +3 degrees, auto trans, and 2400 RPM stall torque converter. I am not running mufflers but retained the stock exhaust manifolds. What would the effect be if I bolted on a GT intake manifold Vs S4 intake manifold? Does anyone have a GT intake that they would sell me?

There would probably be no change in power output.

Your wheels do look nice!

This comes from memory so some details can be wrong. There is story in Excellence Was Expected book about GT's development. In general engines need to develop certain hp numbers like 330 +/- 5 hp for instance so that they are acceptable. On first '89 GT's Porsche had difficulties meeting 330 hp rating on some of the prototype engines. They were some 5 hp or some such number short off advertised figure. To rectify this factory changed intake in some way. Casting stayed the same I think but channels were enlarged ever so slightly maybe. This was not cheap change as it required some new tooling but they saw it to be necessary for meeting already published hp numbers. To make production easier, also S4 got same improved part at beginning of '90 model year if I remember it right. So '87 to '89 S4 intake should have different part number than what came to use to all models from '90 onwards. To my understanding they are interchangable and very likely later model is what is available as new part. Casting number should stay same up to last GTS's.

Nick,
The wheels are 2 piece Enkei RC5 18", x 8.5" +54mm, and x 10" +60mm. The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport Ribs, 225/40ZR-18 and 285/30ZR-18. No issues with clearance and stability is much better then 16". I would have preferred +60mm on the front but that would require custom wheels. These work well enough for the street.

Lagavulin,
Thank you for the info. I also think that any HP gain might be insignificant. Thanks for the comment on the wheels. They are a compromise between custom and off the shelf. I wanted to fit 285/30s on the rear without flaring the fenders.

Erkka,
It would be interesting to experiment and see what happens by installing the GT intake system. It is nice to know that it will bolt up. This might be an option if I want to match my intake to the red powder coat on the valve covers. I installed 968 intake valves when I rebuilt the heads.

Thank you,
Steve

Nick,

The spoiler was fabricated from a fiberglass GTS wing and aluminum stock. The wing is 3" off the deck to catch clean air. At higher speeds the original wing does not work well. The car wanders and I wanted to stop that from happening.

I wonder if any of you enterprising 928'ers would ever consider building a 4" spacer to bring our wings up into the atmosphere. Just a simple bolt on spacer that looks as good as our 928's do already?

Im temped to take the stock manifold and hand carve it out with a dremel, not just extrude honed

mk

ps: i have the spacers , just need to copy them and make them out of some solid material rather than my composite plastic/foam sandwitch stack.
