Winter Tire Recommendations
Because of some temporary living conditions this winter I will be daily driving my '84 instead of storing it. More on driving vs. storing outside over here...https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...riving-it.html
The owner's manual dictates using 205/55/R16 for winter tires. This gives a lot of options over at Tire Rack and Discount Tire (my two preferred gotos for tires)
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...&performance=W
https://www.discounttire.com/fitment...ice-asc&page=0
Does anyone have first hand experience with any winter tires that they can either recommend or suggest staying away from? I'll be driving in the Seattle area so not much if any snow but below freezing temps down to the low 30s at the extreme and lots of rain. If its's icy I'll be staying home since they don't salt all the roads out here.

Have a gander at this thread:

Then go buy some Nokian or Blizzak tires, which in my opinion are the only two options when buying a dedicated winter tire.
However, I'm always buying with snow in mind, in your situation Hakkapeliitta and Blizzaks might be overkill.
Nokian also makes the WRG4 which is an all season some claim are better in snow than some lessar brand snow tires. That might be a good option for you.

You won't be driving it in snow, correct?
That would make real snow tires (Blizzak or similar) unnecessary.
The big thing you need is the "M+S" rating.
"Summer" tires ('high performance' or 'ultra high performance') are made from a rubber compound that gets very hard below about 40F.. I have some on my 944 and it gets seriously 'skaty' when it gets cold.
I think the Conti DWS would suit fine.
Personally, I'd just go with the 225/50 16s, Again you don't need to go with a narrow footprint, which is helpful in snow.

Every piece of **** tire I've had that came apart was a conti DWS. on my 3rd set I had road hazard and the warranty people at tire rack told me that saw more conti DWS failures than any other 3 tires combined. I had more than one failure from each set.

Nate,
For the PNW lowlands, I would suggest the Conti DWS-06 or Michelin AS/3+ in the same size as your summer tires. The Conti's-- with fresh tread-- will be happier in the occasional snow. I am partial to the Michelins otherwise, that's what we have on the GT for the winter. (And the Conti DWS-06 on the Cayenne if it gets serious).
Cheers,

Interesting. Could it be Texas heat-related? It's pretty tough to make a tire that can deal with hot summer temperatures and still do well in freezing temps. That always seemed like too big a stretch, to me.

That's odd. I ran through 2 sets on my SAAB 9-5, both down to the wear bars with no issues. I also have a set on the wife's Honda Odyssey as summer tires (just finished the second summer on them). It gets pretty hot here in the summer, not as hot as Texas, but several long camping trips hauling the trailer during 90f temps with the 4000 lb van on DWS 06's and again no issues.
To be sure we are talking about the same tires, mine were all the DWS 06, not the older DWS.

Or maybe I just got lucky with the 3 sets I have purchased, who knows. My buddy just put a set on his Focus and is running them 160km's per day commuting, will have to ask him in a few months how they are performing.
My tire shop only sells me tires that are under 12 months old as well. @928sg were the production date stamps recent on the tires you had? Just curious since this might affect my planned purchase of another set this spring for my daily.

my 1st DWS failure was on an old 124 AMG Hammer 400e don't remember the date. Tread peeled off, like a retread.... all the way down to the belts. 2nd failure years later was on my 2005 BMW X5 (e53) and the last and final was on my 2000 MB SL500 r129. The R129 was in at one of our 928 3rd coast event maybe 2015 or 2016. Entire sidewall disintegrated at highway speeds. The guy behind me pulled over to see how I was as he saw my headlights and wondered how I straightened it out. tire rack replaced that one on road hazard and that is when I was told that all 4 of my tires where under a recall but somehow I wasn't notified. I'll never own another conti. EVER. I bought them because they had good reviews, and had thicker tread. I'll see if I can dig up pics. The last one you could stick your hand between the beading and the tread and run your hand all the way around 360 degrees.

Thanks everyone
.
I have Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires on now. Looks like the DWS 06 is the choice for the climate I am in. Now I just need to source a cheap set of wheels so as to not scuff up my manholes.

I've got the Mich AS3's but they have never seen snow. Great for summer, plus cold and rain. Supposedly decent in light snow, the kind you see. The 16" wheels may help you decide -- no idea if the AS3's come in 16" sizes. They ride great, handling is short of the extreme summer PS but tread wear is supposed to be better. I'm happy with them. IIRC, Malcolm uses them on his Calgary 928 rides.

Interesting that some folks have had issues with the Conti tires.
I had a set of the older Extreme Contact on my 928 when I got it. Wore them down to the wear bars.
I had a set of the DWS on my Cayenne when I got it. Wore them down to where the "W" was starting to disappear.
