My few minutes of third hand internet 'research' led to a sort of consensus that acceptable tire widths were to be 0.85 to 1.15x the width of the wheel. So a 9" wheel (228 mm wide) is good for up to 265 mm. I'm a little outside that range but I need the width and so far the wheels have not fallen off.

Rob, what I learned somewhere and still try to follow is that the width of the tire should be based on the one that will result in the tread patch on the road being very close to the width of the rim. So for a 9 inch wide tire I multiply that by 25.4 then add some for the side wall bulge, which depends on the percentage profile of the tire itself. For a 17 inch wheel and looking at 25 to 25.5 or so inches in overall tire height for the rear tires, for me, that results in a 255 40 17 tire.or possibly a 265 40 17. The 255 is right at 25 inches tall and the 265 is about 25.4 inches tall. I prefer the slightly taller one.
