Key replacement by photo update...
A while back I had misplaced my key and had no photos of it. Update, I found the key, and to keep it from happening again took a bunch of hi-res photos and sent them to Keys in the Post. Good news bad news, and a lesson follows.
First of all Keys in the Post was VERY good to work with. From the photos, my original key was very worn and Jon from Keys in the Post could not discern what some of the cuts should be. He actually cut me three different keys (at no extra charge) based on his best interpretation from my photos and said one of them should work.
The good news (and bad news) is that one of them does work 90%. It will lock and unlock the driver's side door, it will unlock the passenger side door and it will start the car when inserted one way (but not the other). In a pinch it will do as a spare key and I'm hoping with regular use it may start to wear to the point it will work as well as the old key. It must be cut almost perfectly, but there's probably some very minor difference between my worn original and this new one. By my eyes, they look to be identical.
The lesson in this is that if your original key is still in fairly good shape, order a spare now. These keys are cut by photos and the more and more they get worn the more difficult they are to cut correctly.

Timely thread...
I purchased an 87 S4 a few wks ago. It came with a bunch of keys but only one works in the ignition. I haven't started the car yet as it's been sitting for several yrs and I'm working on cleaning the fuel system first. But I've tried several locksmiths here in OMA and they all say they can't cut a duplicate key. One said they couldn't get a blank and the 2nd thought my key might be a valet. He suggested having Porsche cut one based on VIN, but I haven't gone that far down the rabbit hole. If there is another option, I'd like to check it out.
Who is this 'Keys in the Post'? and how do I contact them? Are pictures all that's required?
TIA

I have been using www.keysforclassics.com for nearly 15 years - they have supplied me with hundreds of keys made from a picture.
NEVER had one that did not work first time and every time.
The 928 community uses them all over the World.

I just ordered some keys from www.keysforclassics.com yesterday. My car only had one key and I thought I better be proactive rather than pay a bunch latter. I am getting 2 keys with shipping and decoding from a pict for $117.00. That seems like an awfully good deal.

Keysforclassic cut better keys than any other locksmiths. You guys that are running around with one key, you must feel lucky. Loose the only key and you are in for some misery...........

Yep, I've had keys4classics cut keys for all 3 928's I've owned.
Hadn't heard of Keys In the Post before - sounds like they're trying hard which is good, possibly just don't have the depth of experience with photo cutting? But its good that there's an alternate vendor picking up the skills.. anything for old cars is increasingly a niche business, so backup suppliers are welcome

OK - Man you guys LOVE Keysforclassics. I'll give them a shot at making a key and report back if their key works any better than keysinthepost. I know a lot of aircooled guys and BMW guys that use keysinthepost with very good resutls.
To my knowledge, these are the ONLY two vendors that make keys for 928s.
I have gone down the dealership route as well with less than satisfactory results.

I used the picture service that's listed in the New Visitor FAQ thread - can't recall which one that is.
I had two keys with lighted key heads done. Both work perfect on all doors and ignition.
