It's too bad that you only have another 170,000 to go. At the rate you're going (270kph) you'll get there awefully quick.

You might want to check into the accuracy of your gauge. Printed in the owners manual in bold text when talking about the temperature gauge:

"As long as needle is in lower field, avoid high speeds and high engine rpm, until engine has reached normal operating temperature."

Normal is stated as the needle being in the center field.

Still had some RPM to go...
Did the 85 engine and the Euro S have the same horserpower?
My car seemed close to topping out at 155.
It may have pulled on to 160-165 if I had more room, or the mirrors pulled back, etc...
May be faster now with my headers, exhaust, and other adjustments...
But I think one of the main keys to the s4s higher top speed is the aerodynamics.

That's why I think the 85 and my 83 euro will be in a similar speed ballpark...
Buit stock s4 with similar power output will be faster in top speed, due to the body shape...

it is possible for the guage to be off slightly I am not 100% possitive, but the thermostats were replaced with the front engine service and when asked I told them to use the coolest one avalible, and I had the temp switch replaced to, and I thought that the operating range is anywhere between the white block and the red, which mine is,

Lizard, Is that 170+MPH that your speedo is reading? I'm not good with the kilo/milo conversions. If that 170mph, thats amazing. Is that a 32 valve engine or a euro etc? how much HP?

that is 173.9886907351022 according to http://hem.passagen.se/perlon/index.html - click on the link on the left for the converter,

it is an 86.5 928S so it has the 5.0L engine with the WIDE intake,
according to the registery supplied by Chuck Z the car came stock with 288bhp for that year, but I have found other references saying there were 3 engine revisions ranging from 288bhp - 290bhp - 310bhp, I am not 100% what engine code I have, havent really looked, and I have not taken the car to a dyno to see whaqt the rwhp is so I have no idea what power I am pushing

Oh, oh...did someone say top speed?

YES, the stock speedo is very optismistic....best to off the tach. so with that pic, tie size, amount worn and the tach data, you can calculate actual top speed plus or minus 1% up to 1`50 mph, +/-2% from 150 - 190 mph, and around +/- 3% for speeds in excess of 200 mph. This is due to tire swell.

To get the most accurate rolling diameter or your tire, put a paint dot on teh tire, roll it for one complete rotation and measure the next paint dot mark.

OR do it the easy way, use a GPS!!!

BC,

You are far more serious looking than I had anticipated. Nice shot by the way. We now know what the Ref. looks like!

I had my 90 S4 at 260km/h that is 162.5m/h a while back it went up to 240 easily but from there to 260 took some time it was still climbing at a good rate when I had to slow down for my offramp from the highway though.

I have to mention I takes a lot more to slow down from that speed than I expected so I took the offramp at 180km/h instead off the 140 I had in mind. The shark fortunately did not complain but took the curve as if on rails.

I did not plan that trip just realised the highway is empty so I pushed it a bit, I'm planing a test with camera soon.

johan what pads do you have? ask when I step on the brakes at those speed the car hauls right down fast, I have to watch my passanger though as if I dont tell them to brace themselves they almost launch through the window and hit my dash

I use only original spares on my car, all directly from the agents.

Make no mistake it brakes like nothing else its just that I did not realise the effect of that kind of speed. I knew that the braking distance versus speed correlation is not a linear one but did not expect this steep curve.
