Default top speed

how fast will my 85 928 go top speed? It says 155mph but when I had it at 140mph on the way home, It seemed like it would go quite a bit faster. How accurate do you think these numbers are? What about the earlier or later ones?

155 is definitely not the top speed. I've seen a number of 32V pre-S4's do it on a track, and clearly there was a lot more wind left in their sails. How about you South African guys? I know that there are many many areas there one can safely do top speed, and the freeway roads are some of the best in the world. What have you clocked?

Remember his car is a 1985. It does not have the hp of the S4 or the aero dynamics.

I have had my 928S 1986.5 up to around 300kmph, I dont have a pic of that, but I do have a pic with me doing 280kmph it reads 270 but I had wider rubber on the back making it be slightly off,

Lizard,

May be you can ask a policeman to clock you. And I hope you didn't take that picture while you were driving.

Road tests from the time when the cars were new confirm a top speed of about 155. S4 cars do about 165. One thing to consider is that often the speedo is rather optimistic at those speeds. I think my 928 runs pretty close to true but my '86 944T was a good 10% off at those speeds, so 140 would be more like 125. That would definately mean you had a lot left. The aerodynamic wall at 140 is pretty strong. My GT gets to 140 pretty easily but it starts having to work hard after that.

Stock speedos are often off by quite a bit at those speeds. I remember seeing more then a few road tests were the speedo was off some 5-10 MPH at those speeds for a 928.

Also mind you that some wheel and tire packages can skew the speedo also.

150 - 160 would probably be the top end for an '85......that's what most mags seem to have in the day....

yah ok getting a cop to clock me at that speed, thanx but no I like my license, I have checked the accurassy of my speedo against those side radar stands and it was right on the money with stock tires up to 140kmph, I didnt take the photo no, I had a friend snap that I was too busy driving and paying attention to the road and my surroundings, I plan on doing it again this summer with a GPS unit on the dash, and at about 250 the acceleration slows down abit, but she still pulls pretty hard, and next time it will be taking a movie showing the speedo and the GPS unit, and a VERY small spot of the road beside us to show that it is not a fake movie I WILL not show the road infront of me due to the fact of too much evidence as to where it took place

actually that is how hot my car runs regardless, and at that speed with the amount of air moving by the engine it keeps real cool, and I had been driving for about 30 min at highway speeds before this was taken

Remember that speeds clocked by mags are bone stock. So, remove the cats and suddenly you have more top speed. I have truly seen an '85 on-track at 150, and it clearly had more to give as it was still accelerating very strongly. The fact that there are no roads or tracks here for one to trest that .... doesn't limit the car's top speed to what it is able to attain in the 2-mile front straight I've seen it on ..... For instance my S4 has clocked about 145 indicated on the front straight at SRP. However I've had it at an indicated 155 elsewhere. A pleasure for which I have paid dearly.

I still have the cats on my car, and a factory exhaust setup, and everything under the hood appears normal, what the PO have done I have no idea, what mods where done, but at a few of the PCNA events I had more acceleration than an 85 5 speed w/ S4 suspension installed

yah she still has good kick for that mileage, which is accurate according to Carfax, but if carfax didnt say it was true I never would have believed it as the car is in remarkable condition

Ask Adam about his stroker blcok, over 165k miles on the clock and ZERO discernible wear on the chamber walls.
