Default Redoing 30 year old Etoile Rims on 928 S4

So here is my question

after 30 years this winter I’m taking off my Etoile rims and having them gone over

checked for straightness

polished and painted

they are in good shape but it’s time to show them some love

my plan is as soon as the salt hits the road the car will goin the garage and up on jack stands for winter and I’ll send my rims out

here is the question

they are completely polished except in inner stars and a circle around center cap that is black

this is how they look now

I'm considering doing the whole star black leaving the very center cap and lip polished

like this (quick photoshop)

now some of you will hate the old school look of these rims

that’s okay ....just let me know between the options I’ve listed which way to go

thank you

Between the two options I like the look of the black star / spokes.

Keep them as they are unless you plan to repaint your car to Speed Yellow then the black rims might just work- but not with a black car- urrgh!

I think they're both good, so I'm no help. Forced to choose, I vote for polished. I put black wheels on my daily for the winter and the truth is, I'm sort of tired of it, so that's playing a role in my response but, with what you photoshopped, there's enough bright work left on the painted spokes that it could work well.

Cheers

I don't hate either one.

I think the polished centers look better on the black car.

The black centers might look better on a different color car (red?).

I would leave them polished, you lose the definition of the 5 spokes with them black. If you do paint the spokes black, maybe red calipers would give the wheel depth and definition.

I dont mind either one. I hate wheels where the spokes are the focus, not the roundness of the rim. Black centres on yours emphasizes the rim, which I like. Mine has GPW wheels to match the body, from the factory, and I think it works for white, where it might not for other colours.

So I decided to take the s4 for one more run which was a business appointment a few hours from home on the way back at a relative high speed i got a blow out

I cant believe how fortunate i was to get it to the side of the road and stopped

just the bead was keeping the rim off the ground and I’m sure a few more feet and it would have touched down

a testament of how solid these cars are that even though the tire came apart violently the car handled it in stride

i could not believe the 30 year old spare and pump worked as designed

So this pushed my rim project timing up to immediate she went on jack stands for the winter

Okay after much deliberation I’ve decided to keep them polished

one of the reasons being while I’m was dropping these rims off at the restorer Bath Wheel Collision whom I’ve used for 30 years

one of the owners who is an old rim head said that he would never change the original look and pointed out what good shape the painted portions truly were

so he suggested that they true them disassemble fix any chiggers which are few and minor and they would polish the lips and rebuild

here are the rims getting dropped off

I would than Re polish the Center stars an center caps and touch up any of the black paint which as mentioned in remarkable shape

I brought the caps home to start on and I’m quite pleased at how they are turning out

the rims should be back soon and than i will finish polishing centers and than the quest for a new tire begins

do to the size Front 235/45 17

Rear 255/40 17
There are not a ton of options

I prefer Pirelli but there are none to b had in this size so i am looking at these

How old was the tyre that let go?

Michelin have you covered size wise- plenty of others as well. Yokohama make good tyres albeit I have not used them on my 928 mostly because of availability in my neck of the woods.

Michelin does not offer a summer tire in that size that I’m seeing just an all season

the tire that blew was about 3 years old

it picked up a piece of metal and lost air quickly

You can get a PS4 in the 235x45 size. They used to do it in PS2 design but seemingly no longer. They still do the stock GTS sizes in PS2 design with Porsche N3 rating. I used to run a 265x40 PS2 on the rear and they are still available.

You can also get the stock sizes in Pirelli P Zero Rosso. In my location I have to take what I can get- at least you have some choices. I also like Continental and Yokohama.

Take a look at the PZERO Nero GT- excellent price to boot- must be a catch somewhere.
