No access to OT, but the 928 content is that one is involved in a transactions.
I'm buying a car from Florida (not a 928) and having it shipped to California.
Any guidance on how the registration process goes? I know I have to smog it to get it registered. Do out-of-state cars get taxed same as cars purchased in California?
I know when buying a car inside California the selling price is indicated on the title, then registration fees/taxes are calculated based on that price.
Appreciate any tips - thanks!

I bought a 964 from Maine and shipped it to CA. After getting it smogged you pay CA sales tax based on the purchase price of the car. I showed the CA DMV my bill of sale.

Exactly. After getting it smogged, get a bill of sale for what you 'paid' (cough cough) and do the registration transaction at AAA.

You need to first thing when going to DMV get a VIN inspection. Get on that line before anything. Bring the inspection certificate and smog certificate to reception desk. My last 2 car transactions took, for the whole process, no longer than 30 min at the DMV. Pay your sales tax with an ATM card. I'm in CA.

A local dealership/ old neighbor sold same consignment vehicles to multiple buyers, 1 owner got the title but no car, the other guy got car but no title, another guy lost deposit on the same car. Somehow all of these were happening within 3-4weeks on Aston, 2 Ferrari, M6, Lamborghini, and several other cars...... and there was rumors of a hit on the dealer owner.
Pick up the car and pay same time, drive into the sunset.

I think there is good advice here Randy.
CA DMV absolutely frustrated the hell out of me. Two part to the smog. Visual and 'sniff' test in larger metro areas. Even if it passed the sniff test, if visual didn't - no tags.
In TX, I lost the title to my truck I was selling. I only had to give them my plate number, and about $13 and they printed out a new title on the spot. Took 20 minutes.

Isn't there an Orange County in Florida? You might check that out, Randy.

It seems that Orange County, CA, is the center of the (car) scam universe. I bought a car about 25 years ago from a consignment lot in Newport Beach. I didn't know it was a consignment lot. And I actually bought 2 cars. One transaction went easily. In the other case I never got the title. Went to DMV. They said this happened often because dealers were only penalized $15 for not submitting paperwork within 2 weeks. So, I decided to go visit the dealer. When I got there it was filled with police personnel. They were going through files. I learned the business owners had fled the country and they had been running a scam exactly as you described. Fortunately, I had the car. The seller who placed the car on the lot wanted it back as he was never paid. California consumer law says any item placed at a business for consignment sale is considered sold. So, the PO no longer owned the car. I did. I got a court order instructing DMV to issue me a title. Case closed. A few years later I bought a car only to discover it had been put together from 2 stolen cars in an insurance scam. After quite a bit of hassling and legal threats I got the dealer to refund my money. I once considered going into car buying and selling myself, but I decided that at least in Orange County, that was way too risky.

Yeah, it was on PCH in Newport Beach. I didn't know at the time that Newport Beach, as ritzy as it seemed, was a hotbed for boiler room operations and other scams. I bought 2 Mercedes 6.9 sedans from that dealer. The story is that dealer had been running similar operations one after another. As one was shutdown, they would open another a few miles away. This time they fled to Hawaii, opened up a car sales lot there and were pursued and arrested by Newport Beach police. It was covered in the OC Register. It was closer to 30 years ago.
