Question Engine Restart Preparation

The moment of truth is approaching...

After replacing the heads and cam belt what should I do before turing the key? I have already:
  • Hand spun the oil pump before installing the belt until oil was flowing in both heads
  • Jumped the fuel pump relay to check for fuel line leaks
  • Squirted oil in to the bores
  • Charged the battery
  • Re-checked the TDC marks several times
  • Topped up the oil

Double check your coolant level and have coolant ready for when the thermostat opens. Other than that from simply a safety standpoint, roll the car out of the shop and have a friend and a fire extinquisher ready or available.

I changed engines last year and I went through everything at least twice and understand your excitement/anxiety.

Good Luck.

Check that the last of the air is bled from the cooling system - via the temp sensor above the thermostat: and again after the eng is warm enough to open the thermostat.....err,err, errrr -varoooom!!

BTW, the lifters may clatter enough to disturb neighbours: that's a test of your anxiety level!

Paul, we've all been watching your rebuild with interest and are hoping your baby returns the care w/o any hitches. When I did the belt and turned her on for the first time, I just sat there in the red glow of all those warning lights in the pod. Don't know if it made any difference, but I gave the computer a good 30 seconds to reset. It took maybe one extra rev to catch, then a little tentative, but no stumbles and she was fine. Good luck.

You might want to pull the ignition relay and crank the engine until you see oil pressure on the gauge ....sparkplugs out it cranks faster . That way when you do start it things are for sure lubricated .
