Finding HP
Did a quick search, but figured as a newbie I had the right to post at least one of these questions to stimulate conversation.
Aside from going stroker or sc, what is the best way to free up power from an early ('80) motor?
Any feedback on air intake and exhaust mods? How about timing? Anything else?
Thanks

Rob ....." free up power "... What you will soon find is free and power never ever are used in the same sentence when talking about the 928 engine ......... Everything about your engine was DESIGNED to make 220 HP or so . To make 300 HP Porsche increased compression used larger valves bigger cams larger ports larger intake runners a bigger throttle body anything less than that and you should get less than 300 HP .

This is disappointing - if there is no free power does that mean there is no free love?
Wait a minute, I'm married - I think I just answered my own question!!!

Well, to be constructive here, I do believe that the early exhaust manifolds are pretty restrictive compared to the later ones. I have heard that a decent amount of power can be found by retrofitting a later s4 manifold onto an early car... Some modifications will be required. Or just get some MSDS headers for your car.
Euro intake, or extrudehone your US intake.
I think Devek has a few extrudehoned intakes in stock.
But as people have said, with a 220 horsepower motor, compared to the 300 horsepower euro, any mods you make will likely be worth under 80 horsepower total improvement. Probably less. Like 40 or so... That is not a huge improvement... But a lot of work, time, and $$$ to improve that motor. As many people have said, sometimes it is better to just fix your car up so it is nice, save that "modification money", and then in a couple of years, sell your car, and upgrade to an s4...

About the only thing that might make a big diffrence is if you can find a diffrent cam.
But they're expensive.
I've been woundering if a hard welded cam would be worth it. IIRC, like $500 a set. It could make a big diffrence on our early engines, as their cams are not very impressive. My question is how long would it last.
