... that a big negative of driving a classic car can be removed. For example, you can put your perfect Ferrari V-12 and gearbox in a storage unit, and go drive the car around as much as you want.
’lectric bits instead of a crusher as a hobby or experiment is fine. But, is painting a Ford Pinto to look like a horse and driving it around the same as riding a horse? Or, IOWs, removing the V12 from a 512BBi, adding ‘lectric bits and then calling it ‘driving a classic car’ is like ... is like ... is something I can’t make enough sense of to complete the simile.
And on the subject of horses, I think at some point ICE vehicles will be like horses are today: playthings for the wealthy and/or eccentric kept on private grounds. Vehicles that are allowed to operate independently of the power grid (e.g. military, police, congressthings, etc.) will have something other than ICE or battery powered motors.
i appreciate hobby wrenchers to make a EV conversion… live and let live.
But myself ? nonono… i even don't understand it , why in gods name put all that high tech in a old car…. you may have "Tesla power" but are still in a old car …. that won't drive as well as a modern one and still many problems that can pop up …. parts are NLA or difficult to find…. etc...
For me , the most important thing in a oldtimer is just his ( period correct ) engine !
Perhaps yes, if fuel becomes very expensive or engines no more to repair beyond extreme costs …., EV ,in some one million dollar "classics" , just to see them rolling at "meetings" …. but really , in a 20k 928 ? no way ….

Lol, I joked around about this concept with my friends. Years from now there will be a "Westworld" type amusement park (probably somewhere in Montana) where you can go and spend a week and be able to drive ICE cars, smoke cigarettes, shoot guns, hunt, and tell dirty jokes without judgement. It'll be the new country club.

LOL. But, seriously... that might be the beginning of a business plan.
Note to any easily offended readers: my picture was meant to point out that we’d need very lifelike androids for Nate’s Westworld mainly because it would be hard to find human staff that could put up with jokes, hunting, smoking, and car driving without being offended and hitting us with HR lawsuits. These would be of all sexes and not just female androids programmed to be playthings, and certainly not programmed to try to kill you.
... unless you’re into that sort of thing. I mean, not that there’s anything wrong with that....
I'll not only invest, I will also be happy to provide a few tire smoking ICE's, a few bottles of Patron Tequila, a few more Single Malts, some strippers and of course guns, ammo, beens and beer...
Hmm ... Camp 928 may be an early nod towards this Westworld thing. The sights and smells of free combustion taking place in an old British roadster (lite) and Mercedes Unimog (full-bodied), cigars, even a primitive campfire. Where everything is green, and you can pee right in the stream! (And that's important.) (Only those who survived the early '70s will get that reference.) But your host for this event is a full-blooded East coast elitist who long-ago abandoned anything resembling substance abuse (i.e., in the '80s), and was thoroughly turned by corporate training into a sensitive modern man. Yeah, kinda boring.

EV conversions will appeal most to those who focus on the beauty of a car - not so much the engineering - and who have a visceral fear of mechanical issues since they bring about a feeling of helplessness. That's not me so much anymore, not most of us, and certainly not Dave. On the other hand, as suggested by belgiumbarry, EV conversion should be a fascinating project to any automotive enginerd, with a result that should tickle the neurons of any automotive enthusiast, far more than an LS swap. I can't think of a more qualified person than Dave to take on such a project! I'll let you think about it.
Gasoline isn't in short supply. Oil isn't in short supply. So in my lifetime, there's no "urgency" for electric propulsion.
The "urgency" for EV's has nothing to do with running out of oil or gas. It's the idea of daily transportation being provided by a renewable resource. Now don't go tossing back about coal generated electricity, I'm fully aware. That's not the point. The renewable energy sector is growing by leaps and bounds, anyone expecting such things to happen overnight is foolish.
Frankly I love the idea of an EV for my daily driver. Never having to stop for gas is the #1 reason why my wife wants one and asks all the time when we are getting an EV. It's only a matter of time before I'll have one in the garage next to my 928's. I'll also have solar panels, a battery system and some kind of wind turbine or two on my property.

Farming is subsidized, is there no demand for food? Not to mention the billions of dollars in subsidizes that goes to fossil fuel companies. I guess there's no demand for their products either?
I don't like subsidizes either, but that's a separate topic which encompasses a whole lot of industries, not just EV's.

I like my ‘lectrical projects in the domain of 1s and 0s.
