Default Same distributor different firing order?

So I went to change my ignition components, and I was just going to do the plugs and wires, but when I removed one of the plugs from the distributor the shaft broke. SO, I broke out my new one.

I will illustrate this in pics below but I am wondering why the cylinder number order is different on my new dist (and you can see that the part number matches so it is indeed the correct part.)

I had called a friend of mine who has a 928 to ask him about it and he said he'd done it before, don't pay attention to the new numbers, just put everything back the way it was. So I matched up all the wires with where they would have gone on according to the old distributor and I am not getting a start.

Anybody come across this?

That ain't right. Correct Bosch number, completely wrong firing order. Where'd you pick up that new distributor cap?

Here's one from a '78, agrees with your old one.

I had the same on mine when I bought it. Believe it's from an Mercedes as I found many Mercedes parts on my car.

According to Wikipedia: Ford Modular 5.0, Ford Flathead, Bentley L410 V8 (from 1959 to 1986)

Per this link, also the same firing order for some Mercedes V8's:

the numbers on the cap are indeed not important if you put your wires as it was.... but are the 2 mounting screws on the same place ? If not, you "rotated" the cap a bit ...
