Default Crank timing gear wear ?

Should I worry about wear here? Has 57k mi on it, crests of teeth have visible wear. can see daylight under a straight edge. I didnt think the steel gears wore out like this. All the other gear wheels are new, so....Part no seems to have updated, from 928105125-12 to -14 - any idea what changed?
Also....recently saw a post I cant find now - coolant weep out of the pump near where the centre cover long bolt goes through the pump flange - I am seeing this with the centre cover off, with coolant still in the block. Is this a sign its pump time? Havent had any coolant loss EVER, but now its been disturbed?
Whats the preferred water pump these days - Roger only seems to list new Laso plastic impeller units? Current pump is a 928Intl rebuild , 15k miles old, No other symptoms.
thanks

Edit - will put a bolt in the hole thats vacant while the cover is off, and see if that stops the weep (at correct torque).

No idea what might have changed between old part number and superceded number. My observation is the same as yours. The first, 928-105-125-12 , has been replaced by 928-105-125-14 .

As far as the water pump.. Replacing it with the one Roger sells is the highest value IMO.

Put a spare M6 into the vacant hole and lightly torqued it, wiped all traces of coolant off the area. Overnight - no more leakage. I think I will leave the pump alone for now - only 15k mi on it, no other symptoms.
thanks

Wear on the crank gear transfers into the belt, which transfers the pattern to the cam gears. If you are replacing the cam gears and the oil pump gear, automatically install a new crank gear, 100% of the time. Put the old one on Ebay and sell it....someone who is trying to save a few dollars will buy it.
The "latest" crank gear is plated....looks like yellow zinc. The one just before the plated one was bare steel. I think the last iteration of the "bare steel" gears was the best ever....very smoothly cut teeth...extremely nice piece. The "latest" one (with plating) doesn't seem anywhere near as nice.

I gave up trying to get Laso pumps to last. I use factory pumps, almost exclusively. (Although I stock both factory pumps and Laso pumps.) Occasionally, someone will "pick" a Laso pump, much to my dismay. I tell them right up front that I won't warranty the labor, even if it leaks before it leaves my shop. If they want the cheap "imitation" water pump, the risk is all theirs. I'm not being nasty about this, I'm not trying to convince anyone, here, to do the same thing....I don't care what everyone else does. It's just pure business, for me. After you've "eaten" the labor on a whole bunch of Laso pumps (I have), you get smart...don't put yourself in that position (I don't.)

Greg,
Thanks for this. Ordering a crank gear now, seeing as I have replaced all the other gears, and a new belt. Since finding that fitting a bolt in the vacant hole has stopped the weeping, I am going to stick with the pump. Seems difficult to find a genuine pump except out of the dealers now, and here they are asking US$1270....
thanks

For sake of clarity, Roger sells them all except for the Guardian pump IIRC.

Which pump is presently installed?

Greg, interesting info on the crank gear. I haven't replaced any gears in the past 6 years, so I wasn't aware of the recent plated one. I found a picture of the new gear and it's easy to see what you're describing. How long has this gear been around? Bummer.. I am probably about to get to replace all of the gears in another 928 soon. I was very pleased with the last new bare steel crank gear I received.

Current pump is a 928intl reco from 2001, but it has only done 15k miles - I think its based on a genuine casting. If I could get a genuine item for anywhere near sensible $ I would probably go for it and be done with it! Roger only lists Laso pumps on the web, but I guess I should ask about genuine pumps.
What would you expect to pay for a genuine now? One web seller is showing one at $640.
