Thank you I'll get hold of the sealant. I'd like to clean the threads out but don't have M8 thread chaser. What's an alternative?

Make it from a spare bolt that is the correct thread pitch.

Thank you. I have the old water bridge bolts (less the one which snapped years ago)! I'm hopeless at metalwork so what's best way to cut the V-slot in the shaft?

Easy peasy. Put the bolt in a vise. Do you have a Dremel or a die grinder? Just notch the bolt threads such that the indentation is tapered according to the photo. Wider at the top (first threads) to narrower as you cut toward the head.

You can also use a belt sander to accomplish this. That's what I have started doing.

Fortunately I have the Dremel out now being used to polish various parts, so I'll have a go with the grinding accessories. Thanks a lot!
