Default How do the interior lights work?

On my "project" '86 I discovered that the interior light relay is missing.

I'm cheap, so I was just going to make one for the time being.

The question is - what's the interior light functionality supposed to be. I see it's a timer plus it has connections from both ignition and the central locking. Can somebody tell me what the delay is and what happens when you lock/unlock etc.

In door switched mode - selected on each light fitting (always off , door switched, always on) the lights come immediately on when either a door/hatch is opened OR the car is unlocked

When unlocked (and door left closed) the lights come on for a delay of ~18 seconds (then turn off instantly - no fade) [central lock connection]

If a door/hatch is opened the lights stay on as long as the door/hatch is open, after closing (all) the lights stay on for the delay of ~18 seconds
The delayed on is truncated (immediately) by ignition on (when door/hatch are closed) [ignition connection]

Also - upon reflection:

If a door/hatch is opened the lights stay on as long as the door/hatch is open, after closing (all) the lights stay on for the delay of ~18 seconds
The delayed on is truncated (immediately) by ignition on (when door/hatch are closed) [ignition connection]
It is also truncated (immediately) when you lock the car [central lock connection] - '91 & up feature

That's actually what I assumed you mean. Thanks

Is your car an 86 or an 86.5? I may be wrong, but I don't think the early 86 cars had the delay timer relay for the interior lights.

An 86 'S2'.

Now that's interesting. The lights don't work. I saw the relay in the wiring diagram but a space where it's supposed to be in the car. I assumed it was missing. I'll make more checks.

Wiring diagrams vary by year and actually even to specific CE panel types in some cases (as may be the case here on part year build change). USA and ROW model are often different also esp. related to lighting.

I assumed you knew the relay was missing from a config that required it, but now you'll need to ensure what the config should have been for your original build. You still have options to make a custom implementation that is similar in functions to the stock types (of at least some years - e.g. it's at least "Porsche like") as you alluded to.

Look at connector H along tthe bottom of the CE panel. Does pin 14 have a wire connected to it?

If no, then you are pre light delay relay,

If yes, then you should have the relay, but it's missing.

Well.... I have an '86 car, an '86 wiring diagram, I'm looking at the 'ROW' page, the interior lights are dead and there's a gap where the relay would be if I believed the diagram. However, I entirely take your point. When I'm not up to my elbows in oil leaks, I'll take a proper look and figure it out.
