What changed between getting the springs off the old shocks with your compressors, and trying to fit the springs to the new shocks? If the compressors enabled spring removal, they should have allowed for re-assembly. When I did mine, I took the compressed spring off the old shock, moved it straight over to the new shock and assembled without uncompressing. I have similar to above, and have done all the shocks on the 928, and 2 complete Miatas without problems.

I had the same problem as you. My standard compressors got the spring off but wouldnt compress them down enough to refit. I bought a second set of longer compressors and that worked. When you place the two compressors on opposite sides of the spring, you alternate winding each side a little bit at a time so you get a nice even compression rather than a curved spring. Keep the ends of the spring facing away from you at all times.
