Doesn't the fan control system on the 928 (later models) seem incredibly over-engineered? There's the sensor, the fan controller, the final output stage, the cooling flaps, etc. Seems a bit much. On other cars isn't the fan control a simple switch (with deadband) and relay?

Has anyone on the List retrofitted to a more simple system?

Everyone,

You're not going to believe this, but I believe this issue was solved by looking into the main engine harness. A couple Rennlisters helped point me in that direction and I think it lead to the solution.
