M -

I just looked at my own pictures of my clutch replacement... The dowel pins need to be driven out of the flywheel so they are no longer in contact with the flywheel. There is no need to completely remove the dowel pins. Take a steel punch (find a punch that is just slightly smaller than the dowel pin is) and tap out the dowel pins from the engine side until they are completely out of the flywheel. You will be able to see when the dowel pin is out of the flywheel by peeking throught the slot between the flywheel and the clutch assy. I beleive there are 3 dowel pins in all.

@Jim Hurtt - The theory was still the same with the different clutches, so your information was still most helpful.

Thanks all, I'm going back under the car today to try to punch those dowels out and put shims in.

This job has been a major PITA, i had to remove the entire exhaust system because the cats refused to come off. Fortunately, it wasn't too hard as none of the exhaust hangers (except the 2 on the last muffler) were in place. Aparently the PO of the car never got around to putting them in. I'll probably buy an RMB just to make it easier to put back together!
