No power to the a/c compressor - any thoughts?
I have a 1981 928 and am trying to trouble shoot the a/c which does not blow chilled air. All settings work but no cold air. I thought it may just need a charge due to its age but when I visually checked the compressor it does not appear to be on. Clutch spins and that's it. Any suggestions on where to go from here. TIA Andrew

Alot of possibilities; is the compressor clutch actually spinning or just the pully?
IF the clutch is spinning (comp. pumping), you need to be sure the system is indeed charged or else things will get damaged. If it is working and you've no cold air, it's most likely a problem with the vac. cans that direct the air in the cabin; a fairly common problem.
If the clutch is not engaging, and the system is charged, you'll need to follow the electrical path back from the compressor thru the pressure switches (there's a high and low I think), then back to the control head to find where the power interuption is.
I know that's kind of basic, but I've never had to do this on a 928; just going from other cars.

There is just a low pressure switch.
It's one of the two switches mounted on the dryer. One is a temp sensitve switch that controls the a/c condenser fan, the other is the low pressure switch. The switch it's self is under the frount lock member.
It could be a bad relay in the head unit. Or the connecter on top of the timeing belt cover could be bad. From there, it's just traceing electricy with the wireing diagram.
