I've used both the little screw-and-hooks style and the floor-mounted ones. As much as I loved using Rob's stand-up unit, I have no trouble using the screw-and-hooks clamps. I have a couple pairs and put at least three of them on a spring to get it out.

Important things to consider include the idea that you just need to unload the spring enough to get the nut off the shock rod. You want to grab as close to the ends of the springs as possible of course. I worry about scratching the finish on the springs so they get a section of split hose slipped over the coil where each clamp grabs. Garden hose is the thinnest wall reinforced hose I have handy, so it gets the duty. A hardware-store U-clamp holds the rod of the spring clamp close to the coils. Use a couple greased washers between the nuts and the hook on each end so turning the nut doesn't try to turn the hook. Grease the threads on the rods where the nuts and hooks will pass. I probably violate an instruction when I use my little electric impact gun to turn the rods. Go slowly and make sure the hooks don't turn and you'll be fine.
